Cox Hotspots FAQs
Do I need a wifi hotspot device to connect to the Nationwide network?
No, you do not need a dedicated wifi hotspot device to connect to the Cox nationwide network. Existing customers can simply download the Cox Connect Mobile App, enter your user and password once and connect to any of Cox’s nationwide hotspots (iOS | Android). You can FIND hotspots by looking at the Cox Connect application or by going to www.cox.com/hotspots. Connecting to a hotspot on your mobile device is as easy as searching for a hotspot named "Cox Wifi" or "Cable Wifi" – once your device connects you can open your browser and you will be directed to a login page to use your Cox.com username/password. You only have to do this once every 2 years on your device. After your initial login, your device will connect automatically to any Cox/Cable wifi that is in range.
Does Cox have portable wifi devices?
No, Cox does not require dedicated portable wifi devices to connect to the Cox nationwide network.
Does Cox have Wireless hotspot plans?
Cox does not offer a dedicated portable wifi hotspot plan. Cox provides access to more than 3 million wifi hotspots across the nation for all Cox Internet customers at no additional charge.
Can I get free wifi anywhere from Cox?
Any Cox Internet customer will have access to the nationwide wifi network. For coverage in your area, have a look at our Cox Hotspots map.
What is the Cox Hotspots feature of the Panoramic Wifi Gateway?
Your Cox Panoramic Wifi Gateway broadcasts an additional SSID, “CoxWifi” network signal, creating an extension of the Cox Wifi network right in your home. This service is completely separate from your private home wifi network and allows guests who are eligible Cox Internet subscribers to sign in and connect without sharing your secure network password. The Cox Hotspots feature is included with your Cox Internet plan at no additional charge. The “CoxWifi” SSID has a separate data stream, so it will not impact your speed or usage.
How do guests connect to Cox Wifi in my home?
From your guest’s device, simply select the wifi network labeled “CoxWifi” and sign-in with their Cox username and password. Your guest will only have to sign into “CoxWifi” once; they will be automatically connected the next time they are within range of your Cox hotspot.
What network should I use while at home – my private wifi network or the Cox Wifi hotspot?
You should use your private wifi network while you are at home for the best experience.
Does Cox Hotspots feature affect the security of my home network?
The Cox Hotspots feature is designed to work on a separate wifi network, so it does not affect your home network. By enabling guests to use “CoxWifi,” you increase your network security because you won’t need to provide your private home wifi network password to guests.
Will the Cox Hotspots feature impact my internet speeds or data usage?
No, the “CoxWifi” SSID has a separate data stream than your regular Cox Internet service. Additionally, the usage and activities of guest users are associated with the guests’ accounts and therefore do not impact you. Please note that Wifi uses shared wireless spectrum, and as with any shared medium, there can be some impact as more devices share that spectrum; any impact should be minor.
How do I enable or disable the Cox Hotspots feature?
We encourage all customers to keep this feature enabled as it allows more people to enjoy the benefits of Cox Wifi, but you will always have the ability to disable the Cox Wifi feature by going to Cox.com/myprofile, selecting “Privacy Settings” in the “Password and Security” box, and clicking “Disable.”
Will the Cox Hotspots feature work when my wireless gateway is in bridge mode?
Yes, your gateway will still support the Cox Hotspots feature so your guests to connect to Cox Wifi.
My wifi-enabled devices are connecting to the “CoxWifi” SSID when I am home – how do I make my private home network my default network?
Sometimes your smartphone or tablet isn’t so smart, so we need to help it. Some mobile devices and tablets automatically connect to your private home network by default, while others will connect to the last successfully connected network. Go into your device’s wifi settings to make sure you are connected to your private home network. You may need to select it manually if your device has connected to “CoxWifi” in your own home. If your device continues to connect to “CoxWifi,” you can always choose to “forget the network” from your wifi devices wifi settings menu.
My guests are unable to connect to the “CoxWifi” SSID. Is there an issue?
With your wifi-enabled device, verify that the “CoxWifi” signal is available and that the device is connected. Open a Web browser and you should be directed to the Cox Wifi sign-in page. Also double-check that your guest is a qualified Cox Internet customer. If the issue persists, please call customer support at 1-800-234-3993.
Is there a limit to the number of devices that can connect to the “CoxWifi” SSID at one time?
Yes, we limit access to a maximum of five (5) devices simultaneously so that users can enjoy a better experience.
Will my address be shown on the hotspot location map or the Cox Wifi app?
No, we do not list residential customers’ addresses on the hotspot location map or in the Cox Wifi app.
Why don’t I see “CoxWifi” in my home?
Cox Wifi is supported on our Panoramic Wifi gateways only. If you have an older Cox provided gateway, please contact our customer care team to discuss an upgrade. Wireless routers that were purchased at a retail store will not support the Cox Wifi service.
