Connecting to Cox Hotspots

Hop online in a sec

Just connect to hotspots like you connect to any wifi network.
Learn how on your device

  1. Turn on wifi and search for networks
  2. Select the CableWiFi or CoxWiFi wireless network
  3. Launch your Internet browser (if asked, choose Cox from the list of Internet providers)
  4. Sign in with your Cox User ID and Password (don’t have one? Register now ›)

Double-check the network

If you see another network with a similar name, it’s probably a scam.

Look for the lock

Private networks are more secure, so connect to networks with a lock icon.

Turn off auto-connect

Turn off auto-connect in your wifi settings so you choose which networks you connect to.

Leave the shopping for home

Try not to share personal info or credit card numbers when you’re using public wifi.

Pass on passwords

Avoid using passwords on public wifi. Try hiding info from hackers with a password manager.

Say no to sharing

Using a public printer? Turn off Printer Sharing in your network settings to hide from hackers.

Site security

If you see a lock icon and the word “Secure” in the address bar, the site is probably safe.

Stay up to date

An updated device is a safer device, so keep your OS and apps up to speed.

COX HOME HOTSPOTS

Add a plus one to your network

Want to share your favorite entertainment without sharing your information? No problem. If you have Cox Panoramic Wifi℠, you already have the Cox home hotspot feature. Now your eligible guests can have wifi access without slowing down your Internet.

Let’s break it down

Along with your secure in-home wifi, Cox Panoramic Wifi gateways broadcast a second signal called Cox Wifi. It's an extension of the Cox Wifi hotspot network that's broadcast from Panoramic Wifi devices, providing separate access to eligible Cox Internet subscribers.

Cox Hotspots FAQs

No, you do not need a dedicated wifi hotspot device to connect to the Cox nationwide network. Existing customers can simply download the Cox Connect Mobile App, enter your user and password once and connect to any of Cox’s nationwide hotspots (iOS | Android). You can FIND hotspots by looking at the Cox Connect application or by going to www.cox.com/hotspots. Connecting to a hotspot on your mobile device is as easy as searching for a hotspot named "Cox Wifi" or "Cable Wifi" – once your device connects you can open your browser and you will be directed to a login page to use your Cox.com username/password. You only have to do this once every 2 years on your device. After your initial login, your device will connect automatically to any Cox/Cable wifi that is in range.

No, Cox does not require dedicated portable wifi devices to connect to the Cox nationwide network.

Cox does not offer a dedicated portable wifi hotspot plan. Cox provides access to more than 650,000 wifi hotspots across the nation for Cox High Speed Internet customers who subscribe to the Preferred package or higher, at no additional charge.

Existing Cox customers, who subscribe to the Preferred package or higher, have access to the Nationwide wifi network. For coverage in your area, have a look at our Cox Hotspots map.

Your Cox Panoramic Wifi Gateway broadcasts an additional SSID, “CoxWifi” network signal, creating an extension of the Cox Wifi network right in your home. This service is completely separate from your private home wifi network and allows guests who are eligible Cox Internet subscribers to sign in and connect without sharing your secure network password. The Cox Wifi hotspot is intended for qualified Cox customers visiting your home whose speed tiers include Connect2Compete, Preferred, Ultimate, and Gigablast. The Cox Hotspots feature is included with your Panoramic Wifi device at no additional charge. The “CoxWifi” SSID has a separate data stream, so it will not impact your speed or usage.

From your guest’s device, simply select the wifi network labeled “CoxWifi” and sign-in with their Cox username and password. Your guest will only have to sign into “CoxWifi” once; they will be automatically connected the next time they are within range of your Cox hotspot. The Cox Wifi hotspot is intended for qualified Cox customers visiting your home whose speed tiers include Connect2Compete, Preferred, Ultimate, and Gigablast.

You should use your private wifi network while you are at home for the best experience.

The Cox Hotspots feature is designed to work on a separate wifi network, so it does not affect your home network. By enabling guests to use “CoxWifi,” you increase your network security because you won’t need to provide your private home wifi network password to guests.

No, the “CoxWifi” SSID has a separate data stream than your regular Cox Internet service. Additionally, the usage and activities of guest users are associated with the guests’ accounts and therefore do not impact you. Please note that Wifi uses shared wireless spectrum, and as with any shared medium, there can be some impact as more devices share that spectrum; any impact should be minor.

We encourage all customers to keep this feature enabled as it allows more people to enjoy the benefits of Cox Wifi, but you will always have the ability to disable the Cox Wifi feature by going to Cox.com/myprofile, selecting “Privacy Settings” in the “Password and Security” box, and clicking “Disable.”

Yes, your gateway will still support the Cox Hotspots feature so your guests to connect to Cox Wifi.

Sometimes your smartphone or tablet isn’t so smart, so we need to help it. Some mobile devices and tablets automatically connect to your private home network by default, while others will connect to the last successfully connected network. Go into your device’s wifi settings to make sure you are connected to your private home network. You may need to select it manually if your device has connected to “CoxWifi” in your own home. If your device continues to connect to “CoxWifi,” you can always choose to “forget the network” from your wifi devices wifi settings menu.

With your wifi-enabled device, verify that the “CoxWifi” signal is available and that the device is connected. Open a Web browser and you should be directed to the Cox Wifi sign-in page. Also double-check that your guest is a qualified Cox customer whose speed tier is either Connect2Compete, Preferred, Ultimate, or Gigablast. If the issue persists, please call customer support at 1-800-234-3993.

Yes, we limit access to a maximum of five (5) devices simultaneously so that users can enjoy a better experience.

No, we do not list residential customers’ addresses on the hotspot location map or in the Cox Wifi app.

Cox Wifi is supported on our Panoramic Wifi gateways only. If you have an older Cox provided gateway, please contact our customer care team to discuss an upgrade. Wireless routers that were purchased at a retail store will not support the Cox Wifi service.
