Summary

Learn to use Parental Controls to block programs by channel, rating, or time of day.

Solution

Parental Controls let you control who watches or buys certain TV programs from your receiver. By using a Parental Control PIN, you can control a variety of viewing options. Select your guide and equipment to learn how to use your parental controls.

Parental Controls must be set up for each receiver. The default PIN is 0000.


Contour 2 is only available in select markets.

Contour 2 Parental Controls

Control who views what with your Contour 2 with the use of a four-digit PIN. By setting up Parental Controls on your Contour receiver you can activate settings to control what is viewed on your TV. Once you have set a Parental Control PIN you can turn on and customize locking settings for channels, ratings, titles, time periods, and even block adult titles in your guide.

Setting a Parental Control PIN  
 

A PIN must be created before any blocks or locks and helps prevent unauthorized changes.

  1. Press the CONTOUR button on your remote control.
  2. Press the right arrow to scroll over to highlight Settings, then press OK.
  3. Press the down arrow to highlight Parental Controls, then press OK.
  4. Press the down arrow to highlight Parental Control PIN, then press OK to set up or change the Parental Control PIN.
  5. Enter a new four-digit PIN.
  6. Re-enter the PIN to confirm.
     
    Result: The locking option will display once the PIN is set.
     
  7. Press EXIT to resume viewing.

Managing Parental Control Locks 

Locking Channels

  1. Press the GUIDE button on your remote control.
  2. Use the arrow buttons to highlight the channel that you wish to lock.
  3. Press the left arrow once to highlight the logo and channel number of the channel that you wish to lock, then press OK.
  4. Press the right arrow button to highlight Lock, then press OK.
  5. If you have already set up a Parental Controls PIN, you will be asked to enter your four-digit PIN on your remote control before you can continue.
  6. Enter the PIN a second time to confirm the channel lock.
  7. The channel is now locked.

Unlocking Channels

  1. Press the GUIDE button on your remote control.
  2. Press the arrows to highlight the channel to you wish to unlock.
  3. Press the left arrow button once to highlight the logo and channel number of the channel you wish to unlock, then press OK.
  4. Use the arrows to highlight Unlock, then press OK.
  5. A message will require you to enter the four-digit Parental Control PIN before you can continue.
     
    Result: The channel is unlocked.

Locking and Unlocking Parental Control Features  

To begin adjusting Parental Control features complete the following steps:

  1. Press the CONTOUR button on your remote control.
  2. Use the arrows to highlight Settings, then press OK.
  3. Press the down arrow to highlight Parental Controls, then press OK.
  4. Enter your four-digit PIN.

  1. Use the down arrow to highlight Movie Rating Locks, then press OK.

    • A grey, open lock icon indicates unlocked movie ratings.
    • A blue, closed lock icon indicates locked movie ratings.
  3. Press OK to turn the lock on or off.
  4. For each additional rating to be locked or unlocked, highlight the rating and press OK.
TV Rating LocksTV Rating Locks allows you to set Parental Controls to lock TV shows and series based on their TV Parental Guideline ratings. Note that series episodes do not always have the same rating: An episode of a series may be TV-14 one week and TV-PG the next, for example.
  1. Press the down arrow to highlight TV Ratings Locks. Press OK.
  2. Press the down arrow to highlight the TV rating you wish to lock or unlock, then press OK.
  3. Press the down arrow to highlight the category within the TV rating that you wish to lock or unlock.
  4. Press OK to turn the lock on or off.
    • A grey, open lock icon indicates unlocked TV ratings.
    • A blue, closed lock icon indicates locked TV ratings.
  5. To lock or unlock additional categories within the selected TV rating, highlight the category and press OK.
Title LocksTitle Locks allow you to set Parental Controls to lock access to individual shows, series and movies.
  1. Press Guide on your remote.
  2. Using the arrow buttons, scroll to highlight the programming you would like to lock, then press Info.
  3. Highlight Movie Info or Series Info, then press OK.
  4. Press the right arrow, scroll to highlight Lock, then press OK.
  5. Enter your four-digit PIN. The title you have selected is now Locked.
Feature Locks

Feature Locks allow you to set parental controls to lock access to certain content, such as On Demand and Apps.

Note:

  • The On Demand Lock requires that you enter a Locks PIN when ordering all Contour On Demand content (free content, purchased content, or content available with subscription).
  • An Apps Lock requires that you enter a Locks PIN when accessing any app content within the Contour TV apps.
  1. Press the down arrow to highlight Feature Locks, then press OK.
  2. Highlight the service you wish to lock.
  3. Press OK to turn the lock on or off for that feature.
    • A grey, open lock icon indicates unlocked features.
    • A blue, closed lock icon indicates locked features.
  4. Repeat for any additional features you wish to lock / unlock.
Safe BrowseSafe Browse allows you to prevent adult titles and programming from displaying on screen, whether in program listings or in On Demand menus. When a title is hidden, "Parental Controlled Program" is listed in its place.
  1. Use the down arrow to highlight Safe Browse.
  2. Press the OK button to turn Safe Browse on or off.
  3. When Safe Browse is set to on, use the down arrow to highlight the safety level you wish to enable (Medium or High).
  4. Press OK.
Day and Time LocksDay and Time Locks allow you to set parental controls to lock all programming viewing between certain hours on certain days.
  1. Press the down arrow to highlight Day and Time Locks, then press OK.
  2. Starts is already highlighted. Press OK to begin setting the start time for the lock.
  3. To set the start time:
    • Arrow up or down to set the start hour.
    • Right arrow to the minutes setting. Then arrow up or down to set the start minutes setting in any 5-minute increment (:05, :10, :15, etc.).
    • Right arrow to the am / pm setting. Then arrow up or down to set the start time to am or pm.
    • Press OK.
  4. On the Day and Time Locks screen, right arrow over to Ends. Press OK.
    • Press the arrow buttons to set the end time.
    • Arrow up or down to set the end hour.
    • Right arrow to the minutes setting. Then arrow up or down to set the end minutes setting in any 5-minute increment. For example, 8:05, 8:10, 8:15.
    • Right arrow to select am / pm. Then arrow up or down to set the end time to am or pm.
    • Press OK.
  5. Press the down arrow to highlight the first day of the week you would like to lock.

    Note: Unlocked days are indicated by a grey open lock icon.
  6. Press OK and repeat for additional days.
  7. Selected days are indicated by a closed blue lock.

Contour Parental Controls and Locking


By setting up Parental Controls on your Contour receiver you can activate settings to control what is viewed on your TV. Once you have set a Parental Control PIN you can turn on and customize locking settings for channels, ratings, titles, time periods, and even block adult titles in your guide. These settings turn on and off for all user profiles on the Contour receiver. Learn more about using the features of Parental Controls here.

Setting a Parental Control PIN 
 

Before any blocks or locks can be set, a PIN must be created to prevent unauthorized changes.Your Contour receiver may not have a default PIN, and requires you to set one up. You can create your PIN using your Cox remote control.

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the remote.
  2. Press the UP or DOWN arrow on the remote to highlight the Parental Control option.
  3. Press SELECT button or the RIGHT arrow on the remote.
  4. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Set Parental PIN and press SELECT. A message asks you to set up or change the Parental Control PIN.
  5. Press the B button to begin the set-up process. Use the number keys (0-9) on the remote to set a four-digit PIN.
  6. Re-enter the 4-digit PIN to confirm that it was entered correctly.
  7. Press the A button when you are finished.

When a Parental Control PIN is in place, the menu item changes from Set Parental PIN to Edit Parental PIN. To retrieve your PIN, the account holder must contact a Cox Customer Care representative.

Temporarily Unlock Parental Controls 
 

Turn all parental controls off temporarily when setting locking status. If Parental Control is set to Off / Relock, it remains off until the cable box power is turned off and on, or if there is no activity for five hours. After that, Parental Controls automatically relock, or turn back on.

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the remote.
  2. Press the UP or DOWN arrow on the remote to highlight the Parental Control option.
  3. Press SELECT or the RIGHT arrow on the remote.
  4. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Locking Status.
  5. Press SELECT to access temporary locking options.

Locking or Unlocking Parental Control Features 
 

By locking or unlocking Parental Control features you can selectively block or lock certain functions and specific programming from displaying. Before you set the specific features that are included in locking, turn on the Locking feature.

  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu.
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  3. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button to edit the lock settings. Locking Status is highlighted.
  4. Press SELECT and use the UP or DOWN arrow to turn on.

Whenever a change to Locking Status or any of the Parental Controls, a message displays asking for the four-digit PIN.

Restrict access to programming that airs during certain times of day for up to four different dates / times.
 

Notes: Set up repeating timeframe restrictions based off of start and end times.

  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Time.
  3. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  4. Use the UP and DOWN arrows to schedule dates and times that you want to lock and press SELECT.
  5. Use the UP or DOWN arrows to select additional timeframes and press SELECT to lock each additional one.
Block TitlesHide title and descriptions of programs that have been locked or titles and descriptions that may include suggestive or inappropriate language.
  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Block Titles.
  4. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  5. Use the UP and DOWN arrows to choose a program rating level and press SELECT to block titles and descriptions for programs at that rating and higher.
    OR
    Highlight All Locked Programs to block titles of all locked programs and press SELECT.
Lock Recordings

Require a Parental Control PIN to delete or cancel a recording.
 

Note: Deleting or canceling recordings removes or cancels all associated recording information, not for a specific day or time.

  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Recordings and press SELECT.
  4. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Prevent Deletion and press SELECT. A checkmark displays to confirm the selection.
  5. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Prevent Cancellation and press SELECT. A checkmark displays to confirm the selection.
Lock Ratings

Options:

  • Clear All
  • NA – No rating provided
  • TV-Y
  • TV-Y7 (CHILDREN 7 AND UNDER)
  • NR (GENERAL) – not rated by programmer
  • G / TV-G
  • TV-MA
  • R
  • NC-17
  • NR(ADULT)
  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Ratings and press SELECT.
  4. Highlight the rating option you want to lock using the UP and DOWN arrows.
  5. Press SELECT to turn the lock ON or OFF.
     
    Note: When the lock is turned on, a lock icon displays next to the locked rating. The lock also automatically locks the ratings above the selected rating.
     
  6. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to select additional ratings. Press SELECT to lock each additional rating.
Lock PurchasesRestrict who can order On DEMAND and Pay-Per-View programming by requiring the use of the Purchase PIN.
  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Purchases and press SELECT.
  4. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Yes and press SELECT.
Lock Services

Control access to Adult On DEMAND and Adult On DEMAND programming by requiring the use of the Parental Control PIN.
 

Notes:

  • Adult Content – All pay channels or programs that are Rated Adult.
  • On DEMAND – When accessing it, prompts for a PIN.
  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Services and press SELECT.
  4. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to select the service you wish to lock.
  5. Press SELECT to lock the service.
Lock Individual ChannelsLock channels one at a time.

To use channel locking;

  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Channel. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  4. Use the UP and DOWN arrow to highlight channels that you want to block.
    Note: You can enter the channel number using the number (0-9) keys.
  5. Press SELECT to lock that channel.
  6. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to select additional channels. Press SELECT to lock each additional channel.

To use channel unlocking;

  1. In the Program Guide, press SELECT on the channel you want to watch. If the channel is locked, the following message displays: Viewing is blocked due to Parental Control.
  2. Press SELECT, then press the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Unlock This Channel Only.
  3. Press SELECT, and enter your PIN.
    Result: A confirmation screen displays stating: Lock is disabled for the channel.
Lock All ChannelsLock all channels at one time, with the option to selectively unlock the channels you want.
  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Press the UP or DOWN arrows to highlight Lock Channels.
  4. Press the A button to lock all channels.
  5. Use the UP or DOWN arrows to choose a channel to unlock.
  6. Press SELECT to unlock each individual channel.
Lock Content Advisories

Restrict access to movies and television programs that contain specific types of content.
 

Options:

  • Clear All
  • Violence (V)
  • Fantasy (minimal, moderate, Intense, graphic)
  • Sexual Situations (S) (implied, intense, explicit activity)
  • Suggestive Dialog (D) (mild, some, intensely suggestive)
  • Adult Language (L) (infrequent coarse, strong coarse, crude indecent)

Note: When activated, the locking Icon displays; however, this does not lock options outside of the selected section. For example, locking Adult Language does not lock implied Sexual situations.

  1. Press MENU to open the Settings Menu and use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Locks.
  2. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  3. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Lock Content. Press the RIGHT arrow or SELECT button.
  4. Use the UP and DOWN arrows to highlight a content advisory that you want to block. Press SELECT to lock that option.
  5. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to select additional content advisories. Press SELECT to lock each additional one.

Before any blocks or locks can be set, a PIN must be created to prevent unauthorized changes. Your DVR receiver has a default PIN (0000), and Cox recommends you personalize it. Use these steps to set up or change your PIN.

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the remote.
  2. Press the A or SETTINGS button to access the Quick Settings Menu.
  3. Press the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight Parental Control.
  4. Press SELECT button or the RIGHT arrow on the remote.
  5. Use the UP or DOWN arrow to highlight the Set Parental PIN or Change Pin option and press SELECT. A dialog box asks you to set up a Parental Control PIN.
  6. Use the number keys on the remote control to set a four-digit PIN.
  7. Re-enter the four-digit PIN to confirm that it was entered correctly.
  8. Press the A button when you are finished.

When a Parental Control PIN is in place, the action item changes from Set Parental PIN to Edit Parental PIN. To retrieve your PIN, contact your Cox Customer Care representative.

  2. Press the A button to access the General Settings Menu.
  3. Press the UP or DOWN arrows on the remote to highlight Block: PIN.
  4. Press the SELECT button on the remote.
  5. Press the UP or DOWN arrows to highlight Enable and press the SELECT button.
  6. Enter a four-digit PIN number to enable Parental Controls.
  7. Re-enter the four-digit PIN to confirm that it was entered correctly.

After setting the four-digit PIN, the current status of the Block:PIN changes from Disabled to Enabled.

Blocking or Unblocking Parental Control Features 
 

By customizing Parental Control features you can selectively block or lock certain functions and specific programming from displaying. You must have set up a PIN and turned on locking features for these to be active. To turn these features on or off follow these instructions.

  1. Press Menu to open the Settings Menu.
  2. Press the UP or DOWN arrow and highlight Parental Control.
  3. Press the RIGHT arrow.
  4. Enter your four-digit PIN.
  5. Press the UP or DOWN arrow and highlight Parental Control feature you want to activate.
  6. Complete the steps based off of the feature from the table below.

  5. Press the SELECT button on the remote. A padlock icon next to a rating indicates that the channel is blocked.
  6. Once you have selected all the channels you want to block, press the A button on the remote to accept the settings.
Block by Time Period

Block content for specific periods of time.
 

Note: You can block up to four different time periods.

  1. Press the SETTINGS button, then press the A button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the UP or DOWN arrow on the remote to highlight Block: New Time.
  3. Press the SELECT button on the remote.
  4. Use the ARROW buttons to block a specific period of time with DAY, START, and STOP settings.
  5. Press the SELECT button.
  6. Press the A button on the remote to accept the settings.
Hide Adult TitlesHide adult titles and content from displaying in the guide.
  1. Press the SETTINGS button, then press the A button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the UP or DOWN arrow on the remote to highlight Hide Adult Titles.
  3. Press the SELECT button.
  4. Highlight one of the viewing options and press SELECT:
    • Always - hides all adult titles
    • Never - keeps all adult titles visible
    • Follow Parental Control - uses other parental control settings to determine what adult titles and content to hide.
  5. Press the A button on the remote to accept the settings.

Mini Box Parental Controls and Locking 
 

Use your Parental Controls to set a PIN to control what channels, ratings, and content is available for viewing on your Mini Box receiver.

Setting a Parental Control PIN on a Cox Mini Box 
 

Parental Controls allow you to control who watches certain TV programs. You can lock programs by rating or block whole channels so they cannot be viewed without the Parental Control PIN.

  1. Press the COX MENU button to display the Menu.
  2. Use the ARROWS to highlight Settings. Press SELECT.
  3. Parental Controls are now highlighted. Press SELECT.
  4. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight Set Parental Control PIN and press SELECT
  5. Use the NUMBER keys to set a four-digit PIN.
  6. You will need to re-enter the same four-digit PIN.
  7. The Parental Control PIN is now set.
  8. Press SELECT to clear the confirmation message.

Turning On Parental Control Locks 
 

The Program Guide lets you restrict access to TV programs in several different ways. Changing the locking status is the next step to turning on Parental Controls.

  1. Press the COX MENU button to display the Menu.
  2. Use the ARROWS to highlight Settings. Press SELECT.
  3. Parental Controls is highlighted. Press SELECT.
  4. Parental Locks is highlighted. Press SELECT.
  5. The Locking Status option is highlighted. Press SELECT.
  6. The ON option in the center column is highlighted. Press SELECT.
  7. Parental Controls are now turned ON.
  8. Press EXIT to close Settings or press the LEFT arrow button to return to Locking Status.

If Temporarily Off is selected, Parental controls remains disabled as long as remote is active or no change has been made for five hours then parental controls are automatically activated.

Locking or Unlocking Parental Control Features 
 

After turning on Parental Controls and Locking Status, you have a number of different ways to restrict access to TV viewing, including by channel, by rating, and by content advisories.

  1. Press the COX MENU button to display the Menu.
  2. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight Settings. Press SELECT.
  3. Parental Controls is highlighted. Press SELECT.
  4. Parental Locks is highlighted. Press SELECT.
  5. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight a category. All of the category options are displayed in the center column.
  6. Change the locking features using the table below.

Block TitlesHide the titles and descriptions of programs that may have suggestive or adult content.
  1. Highlight Block Titles. Press SELECT.
  2. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight ON or OFF.

  • NA – No rating provided

  • NR (GENERAL)

  1. Highlight Lock Ratings. Press SELECT.
  2. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight the ratings you want to lock or unlock.
  3. Press SELECT to lock or unlock.
Lock ChannelsYou can lock all channels at one time and then selectively unlock the channels you want.
  1. Highlight Lock Channels. Press SELECT.
  2. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight the channels you want to lock or unlock.
  3. Press SELECT to lock or unlock.
Content Advisories

Restrict access to movies and television programs that contain certain types of content. 

Options:

  • Violence (V)
  • Fantasy
  • Sexual Situations (S)
  • Suggestive Dialog (D)
  • Adult Language (L)

Note: When activated, the locking Icon displays.

  1. Highlight Lock Content Advisories. Press SELECT.
  2. Use the ARROW buttons to highlight the content level you want to lock or unlock.
  3. Press SELECT to lock or unlock.
