Could baseball be your next home run?

As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, nearly 170 million people are eagerly awaiting the annual rite of spring – baseball season.

If you’re having some trouble getting excited about watching a baseball game, consider these questions about your customers.

Does your business sell a product or service? What does your ideal customer base look like? Are they older than 25? Did they attend college? Are they homeowners with above-average household incomes?

If you said yes to any of these questions, chances are your target customer is a Major League Baseball fan. They’re excited because Spring Training for America’s pastime is underway, and Opening Day is right around the corner.

Why are MLB fans important to your business? Because they’re more likely to spend money on major purchases, active vacations, home improvement, and health services in the next year than the average adult in Hampton Roads.

According to Scarborough Research, compared to the average local household, those who watch Major League Baseball are:
  • 102% more likely to take a golf or tennis vacation in the next 12 months
  • 99% more likely to purchase a second home
  • 75% more likely to have exterior painting done
  • 71% more likely planning a home addition
  • 63% more likely to be planning to purchase an ATV
  • 33% more likely to have visited a cardiologist in the last year

All 30 Major League Baseball teams take the field starting April 1. ESPN will televise four games that day and seven more over the first week of the season. Sunday Night Baseball – ESPN’s signature MLB franchise – returns for its 32nd season in 2021. Fox Sports 1 carries one (and sometimes two) MLB games on most Saturday afternoons and evenings all season long.

In Hampton Roads, the favorite big-league teams are likely the 2019 World Series champion Washington Nationals or the Norfolk Tides’ parent club, the Baltimore Orioles. For the next six months, these potential customers can watch the Nationals or Orioles on TV nearly every day of the week on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).

Whether or not you like baseball, many of your potential customers do. If your customer cares about it, you should too. By targeting MLB fans on ESPN, FS1, and MASN, local businesses can reach affluent customers without breaking their marketing budgets.
