Celebrate your fur babies all month long with these simple ideas.
February is Responsible Pet Owners Month and it’s dedicated to loving your fur baby by ensuring they have everything they need to live happy, healthy lives. Find out what you can do for your pet this month.
1. Spa Day
Just like humans, pets deserve a little pampering, too. Keep them looking good by scheduling a visit to the groomer. Even if your fur baby looks clean, getting them professionally groomed is a good way to maintain their coat and skin. Don’t forget the manicure and pedicure as well. If you can’t make it to the groomer as often as you’d like, there are still plenty of things you can do at home to keep your pet looking good, like brushing their fur and teeth. Grooming is an important aspect of being a responsible pet owner and the sooner you get in the habit of doing these things, the more your pet will grow accustomed to them.
2. Take Them on an Adventure
While a walk around the block may suffice for a quick potty break, dogs require a lot of exercise to stay lean and healthy. Dedicate this month to taking yours on a new adventure every weekend. Hikes and trips to the park are a great way to get your pet the workout it needs. If you opt for a hike, make sure to go on a day when the temperatures are mild and bring plenty of water. You will also want to choose activities appropriate for its breed. Larger dogs can likely handle a long trek, while smaller breeds may prefer a trip to the park where they can play with other dogs.
3. Health Checks
An important aspect of being a responsible pet owner is scheduling regular veterinary checkups. If you haven’t stayed top of their annual vaccines, dental care and nutrition, this month is as good a time as any. Your veterinarian can help monitor your animal’s health and answer any concerns you may have regarding their weight, age, activity level or allergies. Routine exams can also help detect and diagnose any diseases your pet may have before further progression occurs. Keeping your pet healthy can help ensure your furry friend lives a long life by your side.
4. Cook for Them
Nothing says love like a home-cooked meal. Most pets appreciate a change from their regular kibble and will likely go wild for your cooking. You can easily find animal-friendly recipes online and make something so delicious that even you would want to eat it. A well-balanced meal should include a protein (raw or cooked), veggies and vitamins. If this is something your pet enjoys, you can reward them with a home-cooked meal on their birthdays and special occasions.
5. Pet-Proof Your Home
If you’re a new pet owner, your home may house a lot of hidden dangers you may not be aware of. Before introducing a four-legged family member to your residence, research any foods, household products, plants and objects that could cause harm. Leaving your pet home alone can be a nerve-racking experience. Keep an eye on them by installing a wifi-enabled camera. Cox offers smart home automation, so you can monitor your fur baby from virtually anywhere. When it comes to your pet, their safety and comfort should always come first. Before installing a camera, make sure you have a fast internet connection to support your device.
Owning a pet is a huge responsibility that extends past the month of February. Spoil them with proper care, love and affection all year long and they’ll return it in spades.
