Comfort Food TV: The Perfect Way to Reconnect

July 12, 2019

Find out how comfort food TV can help you reconnect to yourself and your loved ones.

There's no denying it: we're in the midst of a TV renaissance. The amount of high-quality content available is simply staggering. From intense political dramas to puzzle shows to complex historical pieces, there's no shortage of thought-provoking material, but what if you're looking for something…uncomplicated? Maybe you've had a long day and need to recharge your batteries, or just want to relax with your family on a Sunday. That's where “Comfort Food TV" comes into play.

What is this delicious-sounding phenomenon? Simply put, Comfort Food TV is any form of television that makes you feel good and doesn't require your full, undivided attention. Akin to chowing down on your favorite soothing snack, Comfort Food TV provides a much-needed release from daily stressors and can play an important role in self-care. Like meditation, watching something comforting gives your brain the perfect amount of stimulation so that you can actually let go of everyday anxieties and reconnect with yourself, or your friends and family. Here are some of our favorites, all currently available on Netflix or Prime Video through Contour TV

Reconnect with Yourself

So, you've had a hard day at work. Or maybe you just got out of a bad relationship. Whatever the reason, you're looking for a little pick-me-up to go with that pint of ice cream. Friends is an easy go-to, as it's always positive, entertaining and makes you feel like you're hanging out with the gang. The new Queer Eye one Netflix is also an excellent choice. Not only is it fun and uplifting, but each episode centers around a new person, so you don't have to keep track of any characters or storylines. Bonus!

Reconnect with Your BFF

As adults, making time for your friends only gets harder. Sometimes we pine for the days of the college common room, when we could all hang out and watch something fun together. Why not invite your BFF over for a mini reunion? Throw on an episode of Sex and the City, made even better with a cocktail or flavored sparkling water.

Or if you're in the mood for some laughs, you can't go wrong with The Office, which has the added benefit of being a workplace comedy — a perfect opportunity to dish about your own job!

Reconnect with Your Family

With everyone on different schedules, sometimes it's hard to get quality time with your family during the workweek. That's why it's so important to set aside specific times for your loved ones.

How about making The Great British Bake-Off a Sunday ritual? With such delightful hosts, this competition show is as light and lovely as it gets. Plus you get to follow the contestants from week to week and make predictions about who's going to win.

If you're looking to connect with your spouse, turn on Catastrophe after the kids go to bed. Any couple can relate to this hilarious, edgy comedy, and since the episodes are all around 25 minutes, you'll fly through the series in no time.
