5 Pop Culture Topics to Chat with Your Kids About During Nickelodeon's Kids’ Choice Awards

March 20, 2019

We’re here to help you be the #coolparent.

Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards are just a few days away, and it’s already shaping up to be one of the biggest (and slimiest) award shows of the year. With appearances from Chris Pratt, Ariana Grande, and show host DJ Khaled, you and your kids can expect to see some of the biggest and greatest names in Hollywood.

We know how hard it can be to connect with your kids over pop culture and prove to them how cool you actually are (they will NEVER understand). But don’t worry, we’re here to help. Here are some topics to bond with your kids over as you watch the Kids' Choice Awards on Nickelodeon this Saturday at 8/7c.

If your kid is a superhero fanatic

If your kid could have one super power what would it be? Would it be to control the seas like Aquaman? Or would it be to possess Thor’s Mjölnir and have supernatural abilities?

Pose this question during the announcement for the winner of ‘Favorite Superhero’ and see what they say. You can also catch up on all your Superhero favorites on Cox On Demand.

If your kid likes to give back

New to the KCA's this year is the 'How Do You Want to Help' category. The new category provides kids a choice on what charitable cause they want to get behind for the upcoming year. Just like the other categories, your kids can vote for the charitable cause they are most passionate about, and the winner will be announced during the live show.

This would be a great time for you to find out what your kids are passionate about, or tell them a cause YOU are passionate about. Whether it’s providing school supplies and snacks to children in need, helping the homeless or supporting animal welfare causes, talk to your kids about ways you can give back to your school and community.

If your kid loves cartoons

From the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to SpongeBob SquarePants, the best of the best cartoons are up for a Kids’ Choice Award this year. We know your cartoon-crazed little ones will be excited to see who wins, so make sure you’re tuned in to find out.

Did you know that your kids can watch reruns of their favorite cartoons using Contour On Demand? Just say "cartoons on demand" into the Cox Voice Remote and they can search.

If your kid is an avid gamer

Video games like Super Mario Party™, Marvel's Spider-Man and LEGO The Incredibles are up for 'Favorite Video Game' this year, and we knonw why. Marvel's Spider-Man became one of the fastest-selling games of 2018, the best-selling PlayStation 4 game of all time, and the fastest-selling superhero game in the United States. Pretty cool, and not surprising considering the movie was one of the most popular movies in 2018.

Speaking of the movie, we encourage you to use this opportunity to teach your kids about the legendary "Spider-Man" creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, who passed away in 2018 and left behind a true superhero legacy that reinforces a valuable life lesson. As the movie credits so eloquently state, “That person who helps others simply because it should or must be done, and because it is the right thing to do, is indeed without a doubt, a real superhero. Thanks to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, for showing us we're not the only ones."

If your kid loves a good movie

There’s no denying that there have been some AWESOME movies lately. We’d be lying if we said we weren’t rooting for our personal fave, To All the Boys I've Loved Before (Hi Noah Centineo), but we are also rooting for the SUPER popular Black Panther (#WakandaForever). What are your kids' votes?

The Kids’ Choice Awards will broadcast live from the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Saturday March 23rd at 8/7c. To stay up-to-date on this year’s show and vote for your favorite nominees, visit KCA2019.com, the official destination for all things KCA!
