Understanding Data Usage

Data usage reflects the amount of data used by online activities, not the amount of time spent online. The average household today has more than 10 connected devices using data for social networking, streaming music, movies, and TV shows, gaming, web surfing, emailing, uploading photos, downloading operating system and software updates, and video chatting.

Cox Internet packages include a 1 TB monthly data plan. Data usage is measured in gigabytes (GB) or terabytes (TB), with 1 TB being equivalent to 1,024 GB. With 1 TB of data, a household could do all of the following online activities in any given month.

  • Watch 140 two-hour HD movies.
  • Watch 100 half-hour standard definition TV shows.
  • Watch 1,500 three-minute videos.
  • Surf the web for 2,000 hours.
  • Listen to 7,500 songs that are 4 minutes long each (about 500 hours of music streaming).
