Setting Up an Email Account in Mozilla Thunderbird for Windows

Learn how to set up your Cox Email in Mozilla Thunderbird.

Note: Cox does not support all email clients. The following is for reference only. For more help using Thunderbird, visit Mozilla support.

To open Thunderbird, click Start, then click Mozilla Thunderbird.

Are you a first-time Thunderbird user?
 

If...Then...
Yes
  1. On the System Integration window, place a check in applicable boxes, and then click Set as Default or Skip Integration.
  2. On the Welcome to Thunderbird window, choose whether you want a new email address, to skip this step, or configure a new account later.
No
  1. From the menu bar, click Tools and then select Account Settings.
  2. From the Account Settings window, click Account Actions and then select Add Mail Account...

From the Mail Account Setup window, complete the following steps.

  1. In the Your name field, enter your name as you want it to appear to others.
  2. In the Email address field, enter your full Cox Email address, such as yourname@cox.net.
  3. In the Password field, enter your Cox Email password.
  4. Place a check in the box next to Remember password.
  5. Click Continue.

    Result: Thunderbird tries to determine your account settings automatically.

Click Manual Config and then edit the server settings as follows.

  1. In the Incoming drop-down menu, choose IMAP or POP3.
  2. In the Incoming row, in the Server hostname and Port fields, enter the incoming server settings per Email Server Settings.

  3. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) row, in the Server hostname and Port fields, enter the appropriate outgoing server settings per Email Server Settings.

  4. In the Username row, in the Incoming and Outgoing fields, enter your Cox user ID, which is the first part of your email address without @cox.net included.

  5. Click Re-test.
  6. Click Done.
