- A recipient can read a message while the sender types it.
- Instant text messaging creates a similar experience to a voice conversation.
- Critical for emergency calls to 911.
The following are examples of use for RTT.
- Contacting other RTT users, regardless of the other user's equipment.
- Contacting emergency services by dialing 911.
- Contact relay services by dialing 711.
- Contacting other TTY users.
Advantages of RTT versus Teletypewriter (TTY)
The following are advantages of RTT instead of TTY.
- RTT eliminates the need to purchase specialized equipment.
- RTT uses the same 10-digit telephone number as voice calls.
- Both parties can send and receive information at the same time versus turn-based talking for TTY.
- RTT is more reliable than TTY.
- RTT offers more characters to use when typing messages.
- RTT can be used at the same time voice is being used.
