Editing an Email Account in macOS Mail


Cox Email is a free service that was included with all Cox High Speed Internet packages. As of August 15, 2019, Cox Email is no longer available to new users.

Go to the Applications folder and choose Mail, or click the Mail icon from the Dock at the bottom of your screen.


From the Mail drop-down menu, choose Preferences.


Click Accounts, then choose the account you want to edit or verify.


Click on the Server Settings tab.

  1. If checked, uncheck the boxes for Automatically manage connection settings.
  2. Under the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server sections, verify your User Name, Password, and Host Name. Is the information correct?
    • If yes, all steps complete.
    • If no, continue to the next step.

Edit your email account server settings using the following steps.

Before making changes, you need the correct user name, password, and server settings for IMAP and SMTP. For Cox Email settings, see Email Server Settings.

  1. In the Incoming Mail Server section, enter the correct User Name, Password, and Host Name.
  2. In the Outgoing Mail Server section, enter the correct User Name, Password, and Host Name.
  3. Click OK to save your changes and then close the Accounts window.
  4. Test your changes by attempting to send yourself an email message.
