Internet Security FAQs

The simplest answer is to use security software like the Cox Security Suite Plus Powered by McAfee, which you can download for free. This software protects your PCs, Macs, smart phones and tablets from viruses, malware, data loss, risky apps and other online threats. Again, it’s completely free.  

 

In addition to installing security software, you’ll need to make updates and run scans as frequently as possible. You’ll have to do these things separately on all devices that have the software.

Make sure you have security software installed, like the Cox Security Suite Plus Powered by McAfee, which you can download for free. Run your software and take the recommended steps to fix the issue.

 

Also, if we detect malicious activity on one of your devices, we’ll send you an email which can also be viewed in your My Account page. If you get this email, you’ll have to scan for viruses on all Internet-connected devices because we won’t be able to tell you which device is infected.

Because no security software is 100% effective, we recommend you use other software in addition to Cox Security Suite Plus. There are many anti-virus programs available, both free and for purchase. Here are a few examples of free software that can remove infections:

There are several steps you can take to protect your wireless network.

 

  • Change your wifi password, rename your wifi network (your service set identifier, or SSID), and disable SSID broadcasting. These things can be done with the Panoramic Wifi app.
  • Update your wifi router or gateway to the latest firmware (this happens automatically if you are a Panoramic WiFi customer)
  • Turn off remote administration in your local admin console
  • Set up guest access for those you don’t want on your personal network
  • Download the Cox Security Suite Plus Powered by McAfee to use software firewalls on all your computers and mobile devices

You can access these security features through the Cox Panoramic Wifi App:

 

  • Advanced Security automatically turns on once you log into the app, and protects your home network from malicious attacks
  • Parental controls keep children from seeing inappropriate content
  • Notifications alert you when a new device connects to your home network for the first time

If someone tries unsuccessfully to log in to your account several times in a row, the system will see it as a potential security threat and “lock out” additional attempts.

We also have tools to detect if your email has been hacked. If we think your Cox email account has been hacked, we’ll send you an email (or a pop-up in your email client) telling you to change your account password. If you don’t change your password within a day, we’ll lock out your account in order to protect you.

If either of these things happens to you, you’ll need to unlock your account.  

  1. Reset the password of the affected email account and your primary user ID, if different. Use a strong password that can’t be easily guessed and is different from passwords used for any other online accounts.
  2. Check the list of User IDs on your Cox account and remove any that you don’t recognize.
  3. Make sure that there are no fraudulent email forwarding rules set up on your Cox Email account by checking your email settings

If we think your Cox email account has been hacked, we’ll send you an email (or a pop-up in your email client) telling you to change your account password. If you don’t change your password within a day, we’ll lock out your account in order to protect you. You’ll then need to unlock your account.
