Frequently asked questions
What are the benefits of fiber internet?
Fiber is the future – as an internet delivery mechanism, it provides fast, reliable speeds, and can scale to keep up with the increasing bandwidth demands of your cloud and connected devices (i.e., cloud-based gaming, 4k video streaming, video conferencing, live social media streaming, and more).
Fiber-optic cables are made of up strands of glass that are thinner than human hair transmitting your data as light (literally, traveling at the speed of light), enabling the fastest symmetrical upload/download speeds, meaning your upload speeds are equal to your download speeds. Traditional cable transmits data over metal cables and cannot currently support symmetrical upload/download speeds.
Fiber-based networks are less likely to be impacted by a power outage than traditional internet transport networks and are less susceptible to signal interference. Fiber networks are less likely than traditional transport networks to be impacted by a power outage and are resistant to signal interference, resulting in less downtime.
How fast is Cox Fiber internet?
Cox Fiber internet can reach multi GIG speeds (where available), for both upload and download speeds. With this rate, you can simultaneously stream full 4K movies, share large files, play multiplayer games online, livestream video and join video conference calls seamlessly.
Do Cox Fiber Internet plans cost more than other high-speed internet plans?
No, you get the same great price whether your connection is driven by our hybrid fiber-coax network or 100% fiber optic network.
How do I get fiber internet?
Cox Internet delivers fiber-powered‡ internet everywhere we serve. That means fiber runs all the way to the node, or central hub, outside of your neighborhood. From there, your home may be connected by a coax cable or, in select areas, we offer Cox Fiber which delivers a 100% fiber optic connection directly to the home. Regardless of your home’s connection type, our network is capable of delivering up to 1 GIG download speeds everywhere we serve, and even multi GIG speeds in select areas. Enter your address above to find out if Cox Fiber is available in your neighborhood.
Will I need new internet equipment?
You will have a new device installed at your home called an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). Cox provides this device free of charge and it stays with your home when/if you move. It is typically a small white plastic device that is placed in an inconspicuous spot central to your home, or in a media panel, if available. The ONT functions as your fiber modem, which is required to bring the internet signal from our fiber network to your home. You will still need a router or gateway to deliver the internet signal throughout your home via wifi, or to connect multiple devices simultaneously.
For wifi connectivity, the technician will connect your router to the ONT via an ethernet cable, which they will provide. If you have an existing, compatible router or a gateway (modem + router combined unit), the technician can connect it for you to get your wifi up and running. Please note that your wifi router or gateway may need to be moved closer to the ONT device. If you do not have an existing device for providing in-home wifi, you can rent a Cox Panoramic Wifi gateway.
What work might need to be done outside my home before my installation appointment?
There are two possible ways to deliver fiber lines to your home – either buried underground or overhead via existing aerial lines in your neighborhood.
In some regions (usually in the West), installation appointments may be scheduled 14 days out. During that 14-day window, Cox technicians will be in your neighborhood assessing if any additional work is required to bring fiber to your home. If that work is required, they will leave information for you to review and include a contact number if you have any questions.
In other areas (usually in Central and East regions), the installation will be done at your home first with the likelihood the cable will remain laid across your yard until a technician can come back to bury the cable at a later date. Your technician will be able to advise you of the approximate amount of time it will take to finish the work based on local municipality regulations.
When burying fiber lines underground, a narrow trench will be made in your yard to drive the cable approximately 12 inches underground. Any disturbances to your grounds or landscaping will be restored to the same, or better, condition after the work is complete.
What can I expect during my installation appointment?
On the day of your installation, the Cox technician will call you to let you know they’re on the way. Upon arrival, your technician will review the services to be installed and do a walk-through of your home with you to make the best recommendation on where to place your new fiber modem, known as an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). This device is attached to your home and will remain with the home when/if you move. The technician may ask for a certain area to be cleared so they can more easily install the equipment.
Next, your technician will spend some time outside installing necessary equipment to bring fiber inside the home. This may include running wire from outside equipment to equipment inside the home through a small hole, and/or running wire through your walls. The technician will likely need to drill a hole into the side of the house to run the wires through; however, the hole will be sealed completely, and the area cleaned up.
After installing and connecting the ONT to the fiber line, the technician will link a router or gateway to distribute the internet signal throughout your home. They will configure the wireless network with a secure password and test the connection to ensure all your devices receive uninterrupted internet service.
Once the connection is up and running, your technician will do a final walkthrough to clean up any dust or debris that may have occurred when installing the ONT, as well as make sure all your questions are answered.
How long will the installation take?
The timeframe for installation may vary as it can be impacted by several factors, but please plan to be home for 3-4 hours.
In some instances, we may need to come back another day to complete the installation, which could include burying the fiber cable in your yard. Rest assured, our goal is to complete all the work in one visit, and to have you up and running on your Fiber-based internet connection as quickly as possible.
Why do I need to be home during the installation?
An adult over the age of 18 will need to be home during the installation. The technician will need to enter your home to determine the best location for the equipment they are installing (fiber modem – a small white box known as an "ONT"), possibly relocate your internal wifi router to ensure the best in-home coverage, and at the end of the installation, make sure your service and wifi are working properly.
How can I reschedule my installation appointment?
You will receive a phone call the day prior to your installation appointment as well as the day of your appointment. You will have the option to reschedule your appointment at that time if you are unable to be home for the duration of the visit.
