At Cox, we never throttle Internet speeds. And we never block or otherwise interfere with your desire to go where you want to go on the Internet. As your Internet service provider (ISP), Cox has always been committed to providing our customers a quality, high-speed Internet experience. Bandwidth throttling can interfere with the download speed, upload speed and overall performance of your network’s Internet service. Curious to test your network’s Internet speed? Yes, Cox recommends devices using DOCSIS 3.0 technology. DOCSIS 3.0 is a leading technology and offers a high-quality Internet connection and overall experience. If you choose to purchase or use your own modem with your Cox Internet service, as of June 1, 2017, you are required to use a DOCSIS 3.0 or higher device in order to activate our service and achieve our top network speeds. As your Internet Service Provider, your connection speeds will never be impacted whether you choose to lease a modem with us or purchase your own. To guarantee the best network speeds and connections, check out the list of approved modem devices.
Cox provides Cable Internet Service where digital data is transmitted over existing cable lines to provide a high-speed Internet connection. Cable provides a more consistent Internet service as performance is not based on how far away from a central location you are like DSL. Additionally, cable Internet can offer higher Internet speeds as the cable wires provide a greater bandwidth than DSL.
Packages are positioned as up to XX Mbps because connections and Internet speeds may fluctuate throughout the day based on usage and bandwidth available. While most customers receive their maximum speeds throughout their service periods, the up to language accounts for the variability of Internet access that happens on a network of our size. Cox’s goal as your Internet Service Provider is to deliver quality, consistent Internet service with fast connections and download and upload speeds for all of your devices.
Two things matter as it relates to the speed of your Internet connection: the download speed and the upload speed. Download is the speed at which your computer receives data from the Internet. In general, when you request a webpage, you pass a very small amount of data to the web called a request and the web page and all of the assets are downloaded to your computer. Upload is the speed at which your computer sends data to the Internet (or cloud). This is mostly relevant when you are uploading pictures or videos from your computer to someplace on the Internet. Generally, upload speeds are slower than download speeds as more customers have the need for downloading information from the Internet, like loading web pages, streaming videos, etc. Download and upload speeds are both measured in megabits per second (Mbps). Check out our speed test for an accurate assessment of your current Internet connection.
Panoramic WiFi is the experience you receive with the Panoramic WiFi modem that Cox offers as a rental with all of our Internet service plans.
