Understanding Your Data Usage

Data usage is the total amount of data sent between your device and the Internet and includes both downloads and uploads. In other words, the amount of data used is based on what you’re doing online, not the amount of time you spend online. For example, 30 minutes of streaming video will use more data than 2 hours of email or social media.

In the average household, there are more than 6 connected devices and streaming video typically accounts for the majority of data used. Most of Cox’s High Speed Internet packages include 1 TB of data each month – enough to meet the needs of the majority of Cox customers. Cox measures your usage in gigabytes (GB), and there are 1,024 gigabytes in 1 TB. Learn more about what you can do with 1 TB of data each month.

Data Usage Alerts
Data Usage Alerts

In markets where applicable, we provide alerts to keep you informed about your data usage. We will send a text message (optional), browser alert and a notification to the email you have provided to us when you have used 85% and 100% of your monthly data plan. If you continue to use more data, we will again send notice if you reach 125% of your Data Plan. Visit My Profile to verify your email address and opt-in to text message alerts (msg & data rates may apply).

Each Cox Internet plan includes a specified data usage amount per month – Starter: 1TB (1,024 GB); Essential: 1TB (1,024 GB); Preferred 100: 1TB (1,024 GB); Premier: 1TB (1,024 GB); Ultimate: 1TB (1,024 GB). Unlimited and 500 GB Additional Data Plans can be added for an additional monthly charge. Data usage in excess of plan may result in a $10 charge for up to 50 GB of additional data and for each additional 50 GB block, except for Unlimited Data Plan subscribers.
