Using Call Trace

Solution

When you receive a harassing call, you may dial a simple code to trace the source of the call.

Follow the steps below to activate Call Trace.

Based on the call status, take the appropriate action in the table below.

If you... Then...
Are still on the call
  1. Press and quickly release the switchhook.
  2. Listen for the special dial tone.
  3. Press *57.
Have already hung up
  1. Immediately lift the handset
  2. Listen for a normal dial tone.
  3. Press *57.

If you get another call or hear a Call Waiting tone first, you will not be able to trace that call. In some areas, after you press *57, you'll hear an announcement that the call can be traced. Follow the voice instructions to dial an additional code, and the call will be traced.

Complete the following steps.

  1. Listen for a confirmation announcement that the last call has been traced.
  2. Hang up.

The number you traced will be recorded by Cox. If you decide to pursue the matter, you must contact a law enforcement agency and we'll provide that number directly to them. By law, we cannot provide the traced number directly to any of our Cox Digital Telephone customers.
