Troubleshooting Tips for Cox Business Internet Slow Speeds


Use the following steps to troubleshoot slow speed with Cox Business Internet.


Complete the following steps to reboot your network based on the method type.

If ... Then...
Go online to MyEquipment to reboot You can restart your Cox device remotely, see Rebooting Your Equipment in Cox Business MyAccount.
Physically reboot the gateway
  1. Turn off all equipment that is connected to your network.
  2. Unplug your router if you use one, then unplug your modem.
  3. Let all equipment sit for 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the modem back in and wait two minutes until the lights indicate it is synced.
  5. Plug in the router.
  6. Turn on all equipment connected to the network.

Complete the following steps.

  1. Disable the firewall on your computer. Refer to your device manufacturer guide or support website.
  2. Did disabling the firewall resolve the issue?
  • If yes, then check the firewall settings to ensure that the ping is enabled and reactivate it.
  • If no, then continue to the next step.

Check your physical connections. The cables to the modem or router and cabling between them may be loose or damaged.

  1. Replace damaged components.
  2. Validate that all connections are secure.

Are you connected to WiFi?

  • If yes, then continue to the next step.
  • If no, then proceed to step 8.

Complete the following steps.

  • Connect directly to your networking equipment or the modem / gateway.
  • Once connected via ethernet, make sure you turn your WiFi settings off.

Check the following to minimize potential interference with the WiFi signal.

  • Verify that other devices such as routers or printers that broadcast WiFi signals are not nearby.
  • Router or gateway is centrally located.
  • Router or gateway is located in an open area away from walls or ceilings.

On the device that's connected to WiFi, switch to the other WiFi network using the following guidance.

  • 2.4 Ghz: Provides greater coverage but less speed.
  • 5 Ghz: Provides greater speed but less coverage.
