Generating a LAN IP Address

Solution

When your computer is unable to generate a LAN IP address and all other troubleshooting has failed, it may be possible to generate a LAN IP address by disabling and enabling DHCP. To do this, set up a static IP address and change it to dynamic.

Note: The process below applies to Windows operating systems.

Complete the following steps to generate a LAN IP address using DHCP.

From your PC, click the Start menu and then select Control Panel.

Are you in Classic or Category view?

If... Then...
Classic View Double-click Network Connections.
Category View
  1. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Select Network Connections.

Right-click the Local Area Connection being used and complete the following steps.

  1. Double-click Internet Protocol.
  2. Select Use the following IP Address and enter 192.168.0.2.
  3. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
  4. Select Use the following DNS Server addresses and enter 127.0.0.1.
  5. Click OK, then click OK again.

Restart the computer, click Start, and then select Control Panel.

Are you in Classic or Category view?

If... Then...
Classic View Double-click Network Connections.
Category View
  1. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Select Network Connections.

Right-click the Local Area Connection being used and complete the following steps.

  1. Double-click Internet Protocol.
  2. Select Obtain an IP Address automatically.
  3. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  4. Click OK, then click OK again.

Right-click the Local Area Connection and complete the following.

  1. Select Disable.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Click Start and then select Control Panel.

Are you in Classic or Category view?

If... Then...
Classic View Double-click Network Connections.
Category View
  1. Click Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Select Network Connections.

Right-click the Local Area Connection and then select Enable.

Note: After completing this process, if your computer still has not generated an IP address, then the Network Interface Card (NIC) may not be functioning properly. Contact the NIC manufacturer for further assistance.
