Connecting a Router and a Modem With an Ethernet Cable

You need the following items to connect a modem and router to your computer using an Ethernet cable.

• Modem - Refer to Cox Business Certified Gateways and Modems for more information.
• Router
• Two Ethernet cables
• Coaxial cable
• Modem and router power cords

Before installing your new modem, you first need to disconnect your old modem from your cable wall outlet and computer.

Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable wall outlet, then connect the other to the modem.

Connect the modem power cord to an electrical outlet, then connect the other end to the modem.

Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to the back of the modem and the other end to the router's Wide Area Network (WAN) port.

Connect the router power cord to an electrical outlet, then connect the other end to the router.

Connect the second Ethernet cable to port 1 on the router and the other end to the back of the computer.

Check the modem and router lights to confirm power, and connect to the network and your computer.
