Internet Safety

WiFi is an easy and convenient way to enjoy Cox High Speed Internet throughout your home or office. However, without the proper security measures in place, you could be leaving your wireless network wide open to unnecessary risks.

An “open WiFi network” is wireless Internet access unprotected by a username and password. This means people that you don’t know may be using your Internet connection in ways you aren’t aware of and can’t control. For example, unauthorized users can access unsecured WiFi networks and:

  • download illegal materials that could be traced back to your address.
  • access your files and personal information, such as credit card numbers, bank account information and passwords.
  • use your network to send out Spam or release viruses.

Who is at risk?

If your WiFi network was installed by a Cox technician, then it is secured by a username and password. All wireless equipment installed by Cox comes equipped with several built-in security features from the manufacturer. Our installers enable these built-in security features (like SSID and WEP encryption) in addition to passwords to ensure continued security. Users may also add additional layers of security by installing 3rd party firewall software sold in retail stores or online.

If you installed your own WiFi network and did not enable the security features, then your network and personal data are at risk. To protect your computers and Internet connection, Cox requires that you activate the security features of your WiFi network as soon as possible.

How do I secure my WiFi network?

It’s easy and free to activate your WiFi’s security features. Click this link and select your router’s manufacturer (i.e. Linksys) and follow their instructions.

Taking these steps will allow safe, uninterrupted use of your WiFi network.
