The importance of a good password is often underestimated. Passwords are a useful first-line of defense against unauthorized users accessing your account without your permission.
In order to help our customers create more stronger, more secure passwords, Cox has introduced the following password standards:
passwords must be between 8 and 24 characters long
passwords must include at least one letter and one number
passwords may include special characters (!@#$%^&*())
passwords are case sensitive, so “SaMpLe4!” is different than “sample4!”.
passwords may not include any form of the word “password”
passwords may not include any form of your User ID.
In addition to the requirements listed above, here are some tips on how to create a strong password:
Pick something that is meaningful to you and easy to remember, but not obvious to anyone else. For example,
don’t use your name, your child’s name or your pet’s name
do abbreviate the title of your favorite song or book
Avoid spelling out words as you would find them in the dictionary.
Be creative with numbers and symbols. Use phonetics to spell works unconventionally, such as spelling the word “before” as the letter “b” and the number “4.” Or use the symbol “*” for the word “star” or “snowflake.”
Try to memorize your password, but if you need to write it down, keep it in your wallet. Don’t post your password on or near your computer.
To maximize the security a password can provide, change your password every 45 days. After all, it’s free.
