Call Waiting

How Call Waiting works:

You can use your telephone without missing other calls. A special tone alerts you to a waiting call; the person calling you hears normal ringing.

To answer a waiting call:

  1. When you're on the phone, a special tone tells you a second call is waiting.
  2. Press and release the "switchhook" quickly, on your telephone.

Result: Your first caller is automatically placed on hold, while you're
connected with the second caller.

To alternate between the first and second caller:

  • Simply press and quickly release the "switchhook."
  • While you talk with one caller, the other will automatically be placed on hold.
  • Each conversation remains private.

To end either call:

  • Hang up the handset.
  • Your phone will ring.
  • When you answer, you'll be connected with the remaining caller.

To turn off Call Waiting:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *38 (on a rotary phone, dial 1138).
  3. Listen for three confirmation tones.
  4. Call Waiting is now disabled. Your calls will not be interrupted by the Call Waiting tone. New callers will hear a busy signal until you turn on Call Waiting.

To turn on Call Waiting:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *37 (on a rotary phone, dial 1137).
  3. Listen for three confirmation tones.
  4. Call Waiting is now active.

To turn off Call Waiting temporarily:

  1. Lift the handset and listen for the dial tone.
  2. Press *70 (on a rotary phone, dial 1170).
  3. Listen for the confirmation tone.
  4. Dial the telephone number you wish to call.

Result: Call Waiting is temporarily disabled for this telephone call only. Your call will not be interrupted by the Call Waiting tone. Other callers will hear a busy signal.

  1. After you hang up, Call Waiting automatically "turns on" again.

Call Waiting ID: Combine Call Waiting and Caller ID

How Call Waiting ID works:

Combining and enhancing Caller ID and Call Waiting, it allows you to use your telephone without missing other calls. A special tone alerts you to a waiting call and you also receive a visual display of the name and number of the person calling. Subscription to Caller ID requires the lease or purchase of a display telephone or an add-on display unit.

Notes:

The "switchhook" is the button the handset pushes down when you hang up the phone. Some telephones have a Link or Flash key you can press instead.
