Adding Extension Mailboxes

Extension mailboxes (a feature upgrade) allow you to have several individual voice mailboxes on one phone number. Callers can leave a message in any of the mailboxes and each mailbox can have its own personalized password. Complete the following steps to set up one or more extension mailboxes.

  1. Call your voice mailbox (which is your home phone number assoicated with your Cox telephone service).
  2. When the voice mail greeting starts, press the voice mail extension number you would like to set up (for box 1 press 1, box 2 press 2, box 3 press 3).
  3. Press the * key and enter the default password for the extension mailbox you wish to set up.
The default password for box 1 is 1, box 2 is 2, box 3 press 3.
  4. Follow the voice prompts to complete the setup.

Note: Once the default password is entered, the system says "You have no messages. To leave a message, push..." This message is not a personal greeting. This message allows you to leave a message in your box, such as a memo to yourself.

  1. Press the numbers 441 and follow the prompts to create your own password.
  2. To create an 8-second name greeting , press the numbers 443 and follow the prompts.

Note: The name greeting is what callers hear if they press the # key to access the list of extension mailboxes. The name greeting can be up to 8 seconds long, so it could be something like, “Hi this is Robin, please leave a message."

  1. Hang up and repeat steps 1 through 6 for each additional extension mailbox.

Note: You may want to record a new greeting on the main voice mailbox, letting callers know that they can leave a message on the main mailbox or on individual extension mailboxes. The message could be something like, "Hi, you've reached XXX-XXX-XXXX. Please leave a message after the beep, or you can press 1 for Mary, or press 2 for Todd..."

How to Retrieve Messages from the Extension Mailbox

  1. Call your voice mailbox (which is your home phone number assoicated with your Cox telephone service).
  2. Press the * key when the main greeting starts to play.
  3. Enter the password you created for your extension mailbox (see Adding Extension Mailboxes ). The system will then allow you to retrieve your messages.

Note: If you're accessing your voice mail from home and you have the Anonymous Call Rejection or Caller ID Blocking features activated, then you must unblock your number (press the following three keys: *82 ) before calling the voice mail access number.

Changing Number of Rings That Trigger Voice Mail

  1. Press *78 from your home phone.
  2. You will hear a stutter dial tone (or dead air) and then a regular dial tone.
  3. Select the number of rings you would like your voice mailbox to pick up on (between 2-9). The default is 4 rings.
  4. After selecting a number, you will then get two fast busy signals letting you know that it has been changed. (In a few isolated cases, the 4-ring default cannot be changed with this procedure. Please contact a Cox customer service representative for assistance.)
