$60,000 in Cox Heroes Scholarships Available to San Diego High School Seniors and Adults
Applications Accepted Through Jan. 23, 2008

(SAN DIEGO) December 15, 2008 –Cox Heroes scholarships, in denominations of $2,500 or $10,000, are available for San Diego high school seniors and adults who dream about furthering their education. Through the Cox Kids Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Cox Communications, a total of $60,000 in scholarship money will be awarded to students who have remained committed to pursuing their educational goals.

To be considered for a Cox Heroes scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria and file their completed application by 5 p.m. on January 23, 2009:

  • Graduate from a San Diego County high school in June 2009
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA  on a 4.0 grade scale
  • Currently attend an accredited two-year or four-year college of university in San Diego County
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Adults must be over age 25 and possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Live within a Cox Communications service area in San Diego Count
  • Have a strong commitment to civic participation
  • Be enrolled as a full-time college-student as of the fall 2009.

Cox Heroes scholarship winners will be notified in May 2009. Winners will be chosen based on their personal commitment to scholastic achievement while demonstrating the perseverance to overcome life’s challenges.

Earlier this year, Cox Communications awarded 2008 Cox Heroes Scholarships to 12 local students who demonstrated academic excellence and personal perseverance. Two students - an aspiring teacher and traveling nurse - were awarded $10,000, along with eight $2,500 winners and one $1,250 winner whose educational dreams include majors in medicine, law, engineering and business.

Cox Heroes Scholarships are funded by the Cox Kids Foundation, through employee payroll donations that are matched 100 percent by Cox Communications.
