Summary

View a list of manufacturers and their support websites where you can find information on how to secure your wireless network.

Solution

To improve the security of your home network Cox recommends that you activate the security features of your wireless (WiFi) network by enabling encryption on your wireless router or gateway. Enabling online security is an easy process that takes only a few minutes and protects both you and Cox from potential abuse.

Since all routers and gateways are different, the steps required to secure your network will vary. Below are some links to common manufacturer's support pages where you can learn how to configure and secure your router or gateway. If the manufacturer of your router or gateway is not listed, refer to the user's guide of your router or gateway or contact the manufacturer directly.

Note: The following table provides vendor resources. As this information could change, refer to your manufacturer user guide for the most accurate information.

FAQs

Why should I activate the security features of my WiFi network?

To avoid:

  • Unauthorized users accessing your network and downloading illegal materials that could be traced back to your address.
  • Unauthorized users accessing your files and personal information, such as credit card numbers, bank account information and passwords.
  • Unauthorized users accessing your network and using it to send out spam or releasing viruses.

What will happen if I do not enable security?

You will remain at risk for attacks and potential abuse. Per Cox’s Acceptable Use Policy, Cox Communications requires that all customers with a WiFi network enable security. It is an easy process that takes only a few minutes, and protects both you and Cox from potential abuse.

Where can I view the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)?

The AUP is available online at http://ww2.cox.com/aboutus/policies.cox.

What if my router or gateway is not listed above?

The links provided are to common manufacturer's support pages. If the manufacturer of your router or gateway is not listed, refer to the user's guide of your router or gateway or contact the manufacturer directly.
