Summary

Parental Controls allow you to block programs by channel, rating, or time of day.

Solution

When setting up parental controls you need to create a Parental Control Pin before you begin. Once a Parental Control Pin is active you can turn Parental Controls on and off and determine what type of blocking is best for your family.

Enable the PIN


Before any block can be set, a PIN must be enabled to prevent unauthorized changes. To set the PIN, use these steps:

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the Cox remote control, then press the "A" button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the up or down arrow on the remote to highlight the Block: PIN option.
  3. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  4. Press the up or down arrow to highlight Enable and press the SELECT button.
  5. Enter a 4-digit PIN number to enable Parental Controls. Make sure to write down the 4-digit PIN in a safe place so you can remember what it is.
  6. Re-enter the 4-digit PIN to confirm that it was entered correctly.

After setting the 4-digit PIN, the current status of the Block:PIN will change from Disabled to Enabled. 

 

If you forget your PIN number, the account holder must contact us to reset it.

Block by Rating


To block shows based on the TV rating, use these steps:

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the Cox remote control, then press the "A" button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the down arrow on the remote and highlight the Block: Rating option.
  3. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  4. Enter your 4-digit PIN.
  5. Press the up or down arrow to highlight a RATING to block.
  6. Press SELECT. A padlock icon next to a rating indicates that the rating will be blocked.
  7. Once you have selected all the ratings you want to block, press the A button to accept the settings.
  8. Press EXIT to return to watching TV.

Block by Channel

 

To block specific channels, use these steps:

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the Cox remote control, then press the "A" button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the up or down arrow on the remote to highlight the Block: Channels option.
  3. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  4. Enter your 4-digit PIN.
  5. Press the up or down arrow to highlight a channel to block.
  6. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control. A padlock icon next to a rating indicates that the channel will be blocked.
  7. Once you have selected all the channels you want to block, press the A button on the Cox remote control to accept the settings.
  8. Press EXIT to return to watching TV.

Block by Time Period


To block periods of time, use these steps:

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the Cox remote control, then press the "A" button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the up or down arrow on the remote to highlight the Block: New Time option.
  3. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  4. Enter your 4-digit PIN.
  5. Press the right arrow and up/down arrows to select a period of time to block with the DAY, START, and STOP settings.
  6. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  7. To activate the blocked time period, press the A button on the Cox remote control to accept the settings.
  8. Press EXIT to return to watching TV.

How to Turn Off Parental Controls


  1. Tune to a blocked channel. The Parental Control: ON screen displays.
  2. Press SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  3. Enter your 4-digit PIN. All blocked programs can now be viewed.

How to Turn Parental Controls Back On


  1. Turn the cable box off and back on. This resets the box to its previous state.
  • Or
  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the Cox remote control.
  2. Highlight the Turn ON Parental Control option, and press the SELECT button on the Cox remote control.
  3.  Enter your 4-digit PIN
  4. Blocked programs can no longer be viewed.

Use these steps to set up your PIN.

  1. Press the SETTINGS button on the Cox remote control, then press the "A" or SETTINGS button to access the General Settings Menu.
  2. Press the up or down arrow on the remote to highlight the Parental Control option.
  3. Press SELECT button or the right arrow on the Cox remote control.
  4. Press the up or down arrow to highlight Change or Create Parental Control PIN and press the SELECT button
     

    If you have not set up a PIN previously you will be prompted to do so, there is no default PIN.
     

  5. Enter a 4-digit PIN number to enable Parental Controls.

     

    Make sure to write down the 4-digit PIN in a safe place so you can remember what it is.
     

  6. Re-enter the 4-digit PIN to confirm that it was entered correctly.

If you forget your PIN number, the account holder must contact us to reset it.
 

 You can set your Parental Controls to be On, Off, or Temporary Off
 

The Temporary Off setting will disable Parental Controls for up to 5 hours before automatically turning back on. 

 

 

Lock or Unlock Channels or Content by Status

The Lock by Status function prevents specific programming from displaying on the channel banner or in the onscreen guide. This function will restrict program viewing.

  1. Press Menu to open the Settings Menu.
  2. Press the Up or Down arrow and highlight Parental Control.
  3. Press the Right arrow.
  4. Enter your 4 digit PIN.
  5. Press the Up or Down arrow and highlight Lock Titles.
  6. Press the Right arrow.
  7. Press the Up or Down arrow to highlight Yes or No and press Select.

Unlock by Channel

  1. In the Program Guide, press Select on the channel you want to watch.
     

    If the channel is locked, the following message will appear: Viewing is blocked due to Parental Control.

  2. Press Select.
  3. Press the Up or Down arrow to highlight Unlock This Channel Only.
  4. Press Select, and enter your PIN.

    Result: A confirmation screen will appear stating: Lock is disabled for the channel.

Parental Controls and Locking


When you lock Parental Controls, you activate all settings for locked channels, ratings, titles and time periods. If you have not locked any channels, ratings, titles or time periods, locking Parental Control has no effect.

When Parental Control locking is turned on, programming matching your lock settings is blocked. To  view locked programming requires PIN entry to turn off Parental Control for the channel or all channels.

If Parental Control is set to Off/Relock, it remains off until the cable box power is turned off and on, or if there is no activity for five hours. After that, Parental Control automatically relocks.

Locking Parental Control From the Settings Menu


  1. Press the MENU button until the Settings menu displays.
  2. Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Parental Control preference.
  3. Press the right arrow to move to the Option column.
  4. Press the numbered buttons to enter the four numbers of your PIN.

    Result: The Option column displays.
  5. Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the Locking option.
  6. Press the right arrow button to move to the Setting column.
  7. Press the up or down arrow button to highlight the On option.
  8. Press the SELECT button. This turns on locking.
  9. From the settings column, you may select to do one of the following:
    • To continue configuring the Parental Control options, press the left arrow button once to return to the options display and select the next option you wish to set.
    • To continue configuring other Settings, press the left arrow button twice to return to the preference display and select the next preference you wish to set.
    • To exit the Settings menu, press the EXIT button.
