What is Secondary Audio Program (SAP)?

SAP is a secondary audio stream that a broadcaster may choose to transmit for television programs. 

  • This stream may include an audio track in another language (such as French or Spanish), and/or descriptive narration for the visually-impaired. 
  • For more information about video narration, see the article About Video Description Service
  • When SAP is available for a show, the program description in the Program Guide will display the SAP icon.

Enabling SAP

Enable SAP on your receiver by following the steps below.

Do not turn on SAP for your TV. Only the SAP settings for the receiver should be turned on.

Press the Settings button your remote control. 

  1. Using the arrow buttons, highlight the Audio & Video.
  2. Press the Select button.

  1. Press the right arrow button to highlight the Audio Settings option.
  2. Press Select.

Press the down arrow to highlight the Audio Language option.

  1. Press the down arrow to highlight the Alternate (SAP) option.
  2. Press Select, then press Exit.

Result: The secondary audio will play for designated programs.

Press Exit.


Result: The secondary audio will play for designated programs.


Note: If you turn on the SAP setting, but the program does not carry a second audio track, then you may not hear any audio at all. Simply turn off SAP to restore the original audio.

Disabling SAP

Disable SAP on your receiver by following the steps below.

  1. Using the arrow buttons, highlight the Audio & Video.
  2. Press the Select button.

Press the right arrow button to highlight the Audio Settings option, then press Select.

Press the down arrow to highlight the Audio Language option.

  1. Press the down arrow to highlight the Primary Audio or English option. 
  2. Press Select, and then press Exit.
