Solution

Turning Windows Firewall On or Off

Windows Firewall can be turned on or off through the Charm Bar in Windows 8.

  1. From the Start screen, move your cursor to the top right corner of the computer screen, or press the Windows + C keys to display the Charm Bar.
  2. Click the Search icon.

On the Charm Bar, click Settings, then enter Firewall in the search field.

In the search results, click Windows Firewall.

Click Turn Windows Firewall on or off in the left pane.

Click Turn on Windows Firewall for your private and public network settings.

Note: To disable the Windows Firewall, click Turn off Windows Firewall.

Click OK to save the settings.

Performing a Security Scan With Windows Defender

Follow the steps below to scan your PC for viruses and other malware.

  1. From the Start screen, move your cursor to the top right corner of the computer screen, or press the Windows + C keys to display the Charm Bar.
  2. Click the Search icon.

On the Charm Bar, click Settings, then enter Windows Defender in the search field.

In the search results, click Windows Defender.

Under Scan Options in the right pane, select Full, then click the Scan now button.

Note: You can also choose Custom Scan to check only certain folders or drives on your PC.
