Activating McAfee Family Protection Powered by McAfee®

To activate your license for McAfee Family Protection, use the steps below.


As a Cox High Speed Internet customer, you have a license to download Cox Security Suite Plus on up to 5 computers, and McAfee family protection on up to 3 computers. You must log in with the Primary Account Holder User ID in order to use Cox security software.

Using Cox Security Software
Remember you can always find all the useful features of your McAfee software right on your desktop with McAfee Security Center. Just click the appropriate link in Cox Security Software Features.

McAfee security software is compatible with Windows 8. Customers may be prompted to reboot their computers after installing this operating system.
Before you install McAfee Family Protection for the first time, you must activate the product license using the steps below.

Verify all Anti-Virus Software has been removed.
You need to uninstall any existing anti-virus programs running on your computer. Complete the steps for your Operating System.

  1. Click the Windows Start icon.
  2. Click Control Panel or Settings and then Control Panel.
  3. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  4. Locate your existing anti-virus software in the program list and click to highlight it. Then click Remove or Uninstall.
  5. If the system prompts you to remove or uninstall software, select Yes.

Mac OS X

  1. Go to the Applications folder on the Mac main hard drive.
  2. Locate your existing anti-virus software in the program list and remove it.

    Follow the uninstall steps outlined in the software user manual.


In your web browser, go to http://www.cox.com/css.

Enter your primary account holder User ID and Password  and then click Sign In.
Note: If you do not remember your password, click the Forgot your Password? link.

Click Activate Now under McAfee Family Protection.

If you see a Manage button instead of Activate Now, you have previously installed this software. 

If you did not see this, click here to find out why.

After following the steps above, if you received this screen instead, you are logged in with a secondary authorized User ID, not the primary account holder User ID for Cox.com.

Check the box next to I agree to the above terms and conditions and then click Continue.

Result: The following window displays informing you that your McAfee Family Proection account is activating.

Once the activation process has completed, click Install McAfee Family Procetions.

Downloading the Software Package

Now that you have activated McAfee Family Protection, you will be redirected to the McAfee website to download the software package to your computer. Select your platform below.

Windows XP/Vista/7

Mac OS X


Your license allows you to install McAfee Family Protection on up to three (3) computers.
