Connecting a Modem With an Ethernet Connection

Solution

You need the following items to install a new modem using an Ethernet cable.

  • Modem - Refer to Cox Certified Cable Modems for more information.
  • Modem power cord
  • Ethernet cable
  • Coaxial cable

    Note: Before installing your new modem, you must first disconnect your old modem from your cable wall outlet and computer.

Check the coaxial cable connections to the modem.

  1. Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable wall outlet.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the modem.

Check the power connections to the modem.

  1. Connect the modem power cord to an electrical outlet.
  2. Connect the other end of the cord to the modem.

    Note: Most modems are always on and don't have a power switch. If there is a power switch on the modem, turn it on.

Check the Ethernet cable connections to the modem.

  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the back of the modem.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the back of the computer.

Check the modem lights to confirm the modem has power and is connected to the network and your computer. Refer to the User Guide to learn which lights should be on for your modem.
