Recently, the use of ”pretexting” has increased. Pretexting is the act of posing as a customer or other authorized person, for the purpose of obtaining telephone records or other sensitive account information.

To help protect your telephone calling records and other vital information, Cox has created a four-digit Private Identification Number (PIN) exclusively for your use. This PIN will be requested during any of the following transactions:

  • Telephone calling records
  • Changes to billing address
  • Changes to authorized account users

The PIN can be found on your current billing statement and will be required for use beginning December 8, 2007.

If you already use a Cox Communications PIN for other Cox services, you will continue to use the same PIN if it meets Cox’s security guidelines. If your existing PIN does not meet these guidelines, you will be assigned a new, random PIN to access your telephone calling records and other account services. Anytime your PIN or other customer sensitive information is changed, Cox will notify you. NOTE: Parental Control, On Demand and Pay-Per-View PINs created on your cable box will not be affected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a Cox PIN printed on my bill?
Cox is assigning a PIN to each customer account to protect our customers’ privacy and comply with federal regulations. Customers will be able to use it whenever they want to talk to Cox about their account and services. Cox Telephone customers must use the PIN to make specific changes to their account or review details of calls. If you're not inquiring about telephone, you can still use the last four digits of your social security number or driver’s license, just like today.

Why do I need a PIN?
If you are a telephone customer you will need to use your PIN to change any of the following information related to your account:

  • PIN
  • Address of record (e-mail or billing address)
  • Who is allowed to access and make changes to your account (e.g. spouse, roommate)
  • Secret question/secret answer
  • Changes to preferred method of notification
  • Request for call detail information

What is the secret question/secret answer?
Cox Communications will soon provide a secret question/secret answer process to provide a backup method in case you forget your PIN.
