How Does a Home Network Work?

A home network is a group of two or more computers linked together.

A home network is a group of two or more computers linked together.

Networking your computers and other devices allows you to connect them to the Internet at the same time and share files and hardware, such as printers. A network also makes it easy to move information from one computer to another (especially very large files that do not fit on a floppy or Zip disk). A home network is configured by first connecting a cable modem to a cable outlet. Then, a router connects to your cable modem and distributes the signal to multiple devices to share the connection, files, printers, and/or Internet-ready game consoles. The router also acts as a firewall to protect your home network and files from outside vulnerabilities.

Wireless Equipment Allows Great Flexibility!

The wireless router provided with Cox Home Networking allows freedom and flexibility.

Your computers and other devices are connected to the network router by wireless network adapters. This works well when the devices you want to connect are portable, such as a laptop or game console, in different rooms of your home and are not near a cable outlet. In these fast-paced times of multi-tasking, it's handy to be able to use your laptop from your sofa, kitchen table, or patio, rather than being confined to a room near the modem and cable outlet.

The wireless router also has 4 ports that also allow you the ability to connect computers and other equipment to the router using wires. This is often desirable if you need to connect your primary PC directly to the router, eliminating the need for an additional wireless network adapter. It can also be used to connect a print server or other devices in the same room as the primary PC and router.
A Home Network from Cox allows a wireless network range of up to 300 feet. With a wireless Home Network from Cox, you can connect up to 4 computers or other devices. Occasionally, a wireless signal extender (available at an additional charge) may be needed in very large homes or when the signal must penetrate thick walls.

What is needed for a Cox home network?

One Primary Computer:

One computer acts as the primary (host) computer. This computer should have a Network Interface Card (NIC) that allows for network connectivity and can then connect directly with a network cable to the wireless router (most computers already have an NIC).

Additional Computers or Devices:

Additional computers (desktop or laptop) or other devices, such as online gaming equipment, can be connected to the network. Special Adapters, not provided by Cox, are required for most online gaming devices, such as PlayStation® 2, Nintendo® GamecubeTM, or Microsoft® XboxTM.

A Wireless Router:

The router shares the network connectivity with the primary computer and other devices on the home network. The router is included in your Cox Home Networking purchase.

One or More Wireless Network Adapters:

Additional computers or other devices, such as online gaming equipment, can be connected to the network with a wireless network adapter. This allows those devices to be in a different room from the primary computer or to roam around in the home. Some laptops already have wireless networking capabilities. One wireless network adapter is included in your Cox Home Networking purchase.
