Netbooks: The Right Fit for You?

What's So Hot About Netbooks?

Netbooks have become the machine of choice for people desiring three key basics from their computer gear: convenience, connection and price. Small in size and light on the pocketbook, netbooks are for budget-conscious connectors who never want to be more than a couple of clicks away from the web.

Netbooks maintain their slim figure and attractive price by offering just the basics in design and computer power. For example, you would never use one for gaming or editing videos. They’re primarily for surfing the web, letting you send emails, stream videos and music, use social networks and blogging tools and online photo editing. They can support work programs like Microsoft Office, though, allowing you to stay productive wherever you go.

Before making your netbook purchase, carefully consider the following features:

Size and weight are two big reasons people buy netbooks. Screen sizes can range from seven to 12 inches. Choose the one that’s best for your eyes. As for weight, on average, most netbooks are three pounds, but there are models that are 2.5 pounds, and some as hefty as 4 pounds, which is more similar to a notebook’s weight.

Built-in WiFi is a standard feature for most netbooks. If it also has Bluetooth capability, you can share files with Bluetooth devices like cell phones, PDAs and laptops. Check to make sure it has a USB port. If you have Cox Home Networking, your netbook will easily connect to your home’s WiFi network.

Most netbooks provide at least 1GB of memory (RAM), which should be enough to perform basic tasks, but there are models that offer 2GB and support a higher level of performance.

Battery Life

Battery life is what helps distinguish netbooks from notebooks. Because netbooks don’t have the same processing power as notebooks, their battery life is usually significantly longer. The Asus Eee PC 1015PE provides up to 13 hours of battery life, a standout in the netbook market. In general, though, most netbooks fall within the three- to nine-hour range. Still, that provides lots of time to use while out and about.

Price is also an attractive feature of netbooks. Smaller in size and power than notebooks, the price, too, is usually lower. Netbook prices you’ll find out there range from $200 to $500. After you’ve found a netbook that best fits your needs, shop around in stores and online to find the price that best fits your budget.
