Staying Connected

Your Kids and Texting

Texting is a quick, simple and mostly affordable way for families and friends to stay in touch with each other. Now that texting is overtaking the phone call as a primary method of communication, it’s more important than ever for parents to choose the right plan and keep their kids’ usage under control. Here are a few things to keep in mind between the LOLs and OMGs.

It Adds Up

There’s no getting around the fact that kids love texting. A lot. Consider that a teenager who averages five texts per hour each day will rack up more than 2,000 texts per month. Unless you choose a phone plan that allows unlimited texts, you could be looking at a huge bill at month’s end. On the other hand, it’s important for parents to…

Set Limits

Talk with your child about his or her cell phone usage. Negotiate guidelines for how much time can be spent talking or texting. Most wireless carriers offer parental control services to help you keep tabs, if necessary.

Everything is Public

Remind your child that every message (or picture, or link) he or she sends is only a few clicks away from going public at any time—and once it gets out, you can’t get it back. It’s easy to think that friends will keep secrets, but in the real world that’s not always true.

Don’t Ever, Ever Talk or Text Behind the Wheel

The National Safety Council estimates that 28% of crashes—or 1.6 million crashes per year—can be attributed to cell phone talking and texting while driving. Don’t let yourself or a member of your family become a statistic. Just turn your phone off when you get in the car.

Know When to Unplug

In other words, be a good role model. That goes without saying, right? But even adults can get caught up in texting. Think about setting guidelines for when cell phones can or can’t be used around the house—for example, during meals or after 9 p.m. Be warned: It might be more difficult than you think!
