Can Home WiFi Ever Be Secure?

Home WiFi

Definitely, but to help ensure the security of your home wireless network, there are some precautions you should take, many of which are available as part of your Cox Internet services. First, let’s look at the risks of an unsecured wireless network.

Who Is at Risk?

Without the proper security measures in place, you could be leaving your home WiFi network wide open to unnecessary risks. An “open WiFi network” is wireless Internet access that is not protected by a Username (also known as an SSID) and password (also known as a WPA or WEP key). This means you and your family are vulnerable to the following:

  • Anyone in range of your home network can intercept your private information or personal files, leaving you vulnerable to identify theft.
  • Attackers can infect your computer with viruses and spyware.
  • Others can steal your Internet service, slowing down your connection speed.
  • Unauthorized users can perform, and make you appear responsible for, illegal activities through your network.

Is My WiFi Network at Risk?

When a Cox customer’s WiFi network is professionally installed by a Cox technician, it is secured with an SSID and WEP or WPA key. All wireless equipment installed by Cox comes equipped with several built-in security features from the manufacturer.

However, if you installed your own WiFi network and did not enable any security features, your network and personal data could be at risk.

Can Cox Help Me Secure My WiFI Network?

We sure can. Home Network Security Check, a free tool provided to Cox High Speed Internet subscribers, is an easy way to make sure your wireless connection is secure and encrypted. If a potential problem is detected, you’ll get easy-to-follow instructions on how to secure your network with:

  • Your own personal network name.
  • Your own security password to keep your network private.
  • An easy way to add additional computers and devices securely to your network.
