The FBI Virus is Back

The FBI Virus is Back

You may have seen in the news that there has been a recent resurgence of the FBI virus.  Here’s what you need to know to prevent your system from being infected.

What is the FBI virus?

The FBI virus is contained in an email that looks like it came from the FBI, hence the name.  If you click on the link or open an attachment in the email, it unleashes a virus that prevents you from using your computer. The symptoms can range from simple to sophisticated: for example, your computer may simply lock up so you can’t access files, or your files may be encrypted so you can’t use them, and a notice appears demanding a charge of $100, $200, $300 or more to fix the problem.

How do I know if an email contains the FBI virus?

The FBI never sends unsolicited emails to individuals. So if you receive an official-looking email from the FBI, unless they are responding to an email you sent them, then it is a scam or virus.

What should I do if I have an email in my inbox that looks like it’s the FBI virus email?

  1. If you have opened the email, then don’t click on any links or open any attachments, but delete it and empty your deleted folder, sometimes also called the Trash folder.
  2. Help prevent the spread of the FBI virus by forwarding this notice to your friends and family. The best protection is prevention.

You can also file a complaint at the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov
