Friday the 13th
Ki ki ki, ma ma ma. First and best entry in the long-running franchise finds a group of teens, Kevin “Six Degrees” Bacon among them, reopening Camp Crystal Lake. Greatly influenced by John Carpenter’s Halloween, the film became a box-office phenomenon, inspiring 10 sequels, a TV series, video games and an upcoming remake. Interestingly, Jason is but a footnote in the story; he achieves superstar status in “Part 2” and dons the hockey mask for the first time in “Part 3.”
Misery
After his car crashes in the mountains during a blinding snowstorm, famous novelist Paul Sheldon is “rescued” from a car crash by Annie Wilkes, a fan obsessed with the main character in his series of novels. But when Wilkes reads his latest book — and learns he has killed her favorite character — she teaches Sheldon the real meaning of Misery. Directed by Rob Reiner, starring Oscar® winner Kathy Bates and Oscar® nominee James Caan.
SERIES HIGHLIGHTS
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour
Robert Redford. James Caan. Peter Fonda. Rob Reiner. Bob Newhart. Leslie Nielsen. Those are but a few of the many stars who appeared in this wonderfully warped series which, like the earlier Alfred Hitchcock Presents, is written in the blackest of inks.
Tales from the Crypt
The Crypt Keeper’s ghoulishly entertaining stories are filled to the crypt with fear and surprise, terrible villainy and petrifyingly poetic justice. These gleefully twisted tales are told with a sardonic sense of black humor — all the better to scare you with!
