Cox Hampton Roads Continues its “Green Initiative” with Purchase of Hybrid Vehicles

Hampton Roads, VA – Cox Hampton Roads recently purchased hybrid vehicles as part of its fleet of maintenance service trucks. As owners of the thirteenth largest fleet in the country, Cox Enterprises is transitioning its vehicles to lessen their impact on the environment by using flex-fuel vehicles and replacing existing vehicles with more fuel-efficient and/or hybrid models. Cox Enterprises’ national fleet is comprised of more than 15,000 vehicles — 257 of which are hybrids and 1,400 that are capable of running on bio-diesel.

Within the Hampton Roads region, this effort was begun as part of the company’s Cox Conserves initiative to reduce the region’s carbon footprint. The new trucks purchased bring the total number of Cox Hampton Roads’ hybrid vehicles to 30.

“These new trucks save money and fuel; they run quieter and they also reduce emissions,” said Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager Gary McCollum.

From 2000 to 2007, Cox nationwide has reduced its carbon footprint by 10 percent. Cox Conserves is the company’s national sustainability program designed to dramatically reduce the company’s carbon footprint by an additional 20 percent by 2017.
