Cox Communications Sponsors Urban League’s Broadcast Career Camp for Youth Ages 13 - 18

Camp Held from June 23 – 27; Cox Day June 25

Hampton Roads, VA – Cox Communications of Hampton Roads is partnering with the Urban League of Hampton Roads to create a broadcast career camp. The camp will be held from June 23 through June 27, with Cox holding special activities on June 25. The camp will involve Cox Communications, but will also engage other partners such as WGBS TV-7, Norfolk State University, Old Dominion University, Hampton Roads Black Media Professionals, and others.

Urban League President and CEO Edith White said “This innovative program demonstrates the power to change the lives of youth through the collaboration of business, non-profits, educational institutions and volunteers. It is critical that we all work together to create alternatives for youth that give them the right choices for their time, energy and talent. Cox’s contributions and support have allowed us to bring this camp to fruition.”

According to Ms. White, the camp is designed to provide youth with a unique perspective as well as opportunities for interaction with media professionals, university faculty and community leaders.

The Urban League and Cox want to encourage academic success and career exploration in broadcast technology, and to increase exposure to university life and understanding of community resources. In addition to underwriting the cost of the camp, Cox also will host 20 to 25 youth for a day of activities at the company’s Crossways location.

“This partnership sprang from an interest in educating young people on the opportunities that are available to them in the broadcast and telecommunications industries. We want to emphasize the importance of reading, writing, speaking, and technical skills in the broadcast communications industry,” said Gary McCollum, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cox Hampton Roads.

“While at Cox, participants will have an opportunity for hands-on experience with television production and marketing. This includes time in the Cox 11 studio and with Cox Media producing a student-driven mock public service announcement. In addition, the students will have a chance to work with marketing professionals in developing their own advertising concepts as well as with Cox technicians learning about the infrastructure and maintenance of the high-tech network,” adds Mr. McCollum.
