CEOs from around Hampton Roads Hear "Corporate Lessons" Learned from Katrina Crisis

Session Held at Kingsmill in Williamsburg as Part of LPGA

Hampton Roads, VA – On Friday, May 9, 2008, the Hampton Roads Technology Council and Cox Communications are sponsoring a conference that will address crisis planning and management preparation for businesses. The executive summit is focused on communicating real world, actionable information in a "CEO to CEO" discussion that is focused on lessons learned during actual crisis events.

Timothy J. Early, HRTC's President and CEO, says, "How do you protect shareholder value and brand and reputation during a crisis? CEOs attending this conference will learn from each other and will share personal insights that they wish someone had shared with them before an actual crisis."

CEO attendees will interact with a panel that consists of executives within the legal, regulatory, accounting and insurance fields. The keynote speakers include Greg Bicket, who led Cox Communications through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Mr. Bicket is the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Cox New Orleans. He will discuss how he and his team led the company through the disaster, and how the team was able to restore business operations following the storm. Mr. Bicket says, "Companies must concern themselves not only with their own business continuity plans, but also with those of their stakeholders. You’re only as effective as your weakest link."

Another presenter is John Copenhaver, formerly the Regional Director of FEMA who led his organization through over 90 declared disasters during his tenure. He is the former chairman of the Contingency Management Group and has provided on-site assistance to the governments of El Salvador and Peru after earthquakes in 2001. He was on-site to provide assistance with response and recovery efforts in New York City following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. Mr. Copenhaver is the President and CEO of the Disaster Recovery Institute.

Michael Braham, Vice President for Cox Business Services as well as Co-Chair and Sponsor of the event, says, "This CEO learning opportunity is an important one. We have top-notch experts who will share actionable information that the attendees can use as they lead their companies through a crisis. Hampton Roads is in a vulnerable situation with regard to hurricanes, natural phenomenon and terrorism. And we should not expect government alone to address our emergency response issues. At their very highest levels, businesses should begin the process of identifying their core strengths in terms of evacuation, business continuity and planning. They also should identify assumptions and mitigate business risks and vulnerabilities. This conference will help top business leaders do that."

Immediately following the event Cox Communications will host all attendees at the company’s Corporate Box to watch the LPGA event.
