The Africa Channel Premiers in Hampton Roads on Cox Channel 239

Hampton Roads, VA – The Africa Channel, a new cable television network showcasing the rich and diverse perspectives of Africa’s people, premieres August 2 in Hampton Roads on Cox Digital Cable Channel 239.

The channel launches with more than 1,600 hours of original and first-run English-language programming, ranging from news, music, feature films, reality, talk and event specials to soaps, travel, lifestyle and documentaries – many of them among the top-rated and longest-running series in Africa.

Flagship series include Africa Within, a vibrant weekly travel hour that takes viewers from Cairo to the Cape, Big Brother Africa, the only Big Brother franchise in the world to feature housemates from 12 different countries and All You Need is Love, a reality series that looks at the ups and downs of love and romance in modern Africa. Also in the lineup are two landmark dramas, the hugely successful Generations, (not to be confused with the former NBC series of the same name) and the ground-breaking Isidingo – The Need.

The Africa Channel also regularly offers a wealth of news and information programming. Produced by Reuter's team of producers and journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa Journal, a weekly series, aggregates the most important stories, interviews and news from across the African continent. Africa Report offers a comprehensive look at the business opportunities on the continent. Carte Blanche, a flagship series, is known as "The 60 Minutes of Africa" due to its focus on investigative journalism and highly popular newsmagazine format. Now in its 18th successful year, Carte Blanche has accumulated more than 80 local and international awards for excellence in investigative television journalism and is seen in 44 countries throughout the African continent.

Original series created for The Africa Channel include Conversations with Felicia, hosted by author, entrepreneur and African TV icon Felicia Mabuza-Suttle and Africa Music!, a VJ-hosted music series that spotlights the latest sounds to come out of Africa.

The Africa Channel also features original, short form interstitial programming interspersed throughout its broadcast day. Designed to be entertaining as well as informative these interstitials include Where in the World Is, a series of one minute spots, each showcasing one of Africa's 53 diverse countries; A Presidential Moment, a series of mini biographies spotlighting the African continent's great leaders, past and present; Cinema Moments, background features on Africa's great films and filmmakers; and Legends of African Music.

In 2006, The Africa Channel won numerous accolades at the annual Promax Awards ceremony held by the National Association of Television Promotion and Marketing Executives. The Channel was awarded a Gold statuette for its "Big Brother Africa" on-air promotion campaign, a gold statuette for the design of its website – theafricachannel.com – and a silver statuette for its Branding/Image Campaign "Where Africa Comes Alive."
