[What is this Kbps and Mbps stuff?]

Upload/download speeds are measured in bps, or bits per second.

A bit is a single character (letter, number, etc.)

Kbps (Kilobits or Kb) is about 1,000 characters per second.

Mbps (Megabits or Mb) is about 1 Million bits per second.

A dial-up modem runs at a maximum speed of about about 53 Kbps (compare this to our slowest speed of 768 Kbps!).

File sizes are measured in bytes; 1 byte = 8 characters (letter, number, etc.)

KB (Kilobyte, or 'k') is 1,000 bytes, or about 8,000 characters.
MB (Megabyte, or 'meg') is 1 million bytes, or about 8 million characters.

A typical mp3 format song is 3-5 MB, whereas a typical e-mail is only about 15 KB.
