Q. Why is Cox Northern Virginia offering local and long distance telephone
service?
A. Competition is good for the consumer, and our local customers have expressed
that they would
like a choice in local telephone providers. Cox telephone service is just one
part of our long-term
strategy to offer our customers a full-service bundle of communications
services. Our customers can
rely on Cox Northern Virginia (NOVA) to meet all of their communications needs
with reliable, top quality
services, including Cox Digital Cable, Cox High Speed Internet, and Cox Digital
Telephone.
Q. Why is Cox - a cable company - allowed to offer local telephone service?
A. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 deregulated the telecommunications
industry, legally
permitting cable companies to enter into the local telephone service market for
the first time. But
telephone service is nothing new to Cox. Through our wholly owned subsidiary,
Cox Virginia
Telcom, Inc., we’re actually the 13th market to launch Cox Digital Telephone,
thus empowering local
consumers with a true choice in phone providers. In fact, more than
one-and-three quarter million
people in Cox markets nationwide have already switched from their former
telephone provider to
Cox Digital Telephone.
Q. Does Fredericksburg really need another local phone service provider?
A. In markets where Cox Digital Telephone is available, customers have responded
with a clear YES!
Similar to what happened when the long distance market was opened to
competition, consumers will
enjoy enhanced technology, local customer service and a better overall value.
Q. Why should I switch from my current phone provider to Cox?
A. Cox Digital Telephone can offer significant savings over your current
provider, and all the same
features you may already enjoy, like Call Waiting, Caller ID or Voice Mail. Cox
also serves as one
company for all your telecommunications needs - voice, video and data. Customers
can call one local
phone number to discuss their cable, high-speed Internet and digital telephone
needs. Best of all, Cox
Digital Telephone customers who subscribe to more than one Cox product receive
savings on their
local and long distance service and high-speed Internet.
Q. Isn’t Cox simply renting its phone line from another service provider?
A. No. Cox Communications is proud to be a facilities-based provider. That means
all of our services,
including telephone, are provided over one reliable network that we’ve invested
in and continue to
monitor closely.
Q. Can I keep my current phone number? In which phone books will my personal
contact
information appear?
A. Cox offers Local Number Portability, which allows a customer to change local
exchange carriers
but maintain their current telephone number in most cases. Your phone
number/address will
continue to reside in Verizon’s phone book.
Q. Will I be able to call people who use other local telephone companies?
A. Yes. The Cox network is connected to those of other local telephone
companies, so you will be able
to call anyone, anywhere, regardless of what phone company they use.
Q. Can I make a phone call and watch TV at the same time?
A. Yes. In fact, you can make a phone call, watch TV and use Cox High Speed
Internet at the same
time. Cox’s broadband network allows you to use multiple services
simultaneously.
Q. If my power goes out, will my phone service be impacted?
A. Cox’s Network Operations Center constantly monitors our network for potential
issues, quickly
identifies interruptions in service, and remedies the problem. If the problem is
an electrical power
outage, Cox provides back-up power so your corded phone keeps working. Some Cox
equipment
(used mainly in apartment buildings) has a built-in battery backup which will
continue to provide
service for up to 8 hours until electrical power is restored. However, our
network uses state-of-the-art,
ring-in-ring technology, which ensures reliability in the event of an outage.
Q. Do I have to be home at the time of my Cox Digital Telephone install?
A. Yes. It is important that we ensure that the phone jacks in your home have a
dial tone and that all
of the services that you requested are in working order before we leave. In
addition, someone at least
18 years old will need to be present.
Q. Will the house have to be re-wired to receive Cox Digital Telephone?
A. Probably not. In rare instances, there might be a customer who wants an
outlet in a place that is
not pre-wired or there is a problem with the existing pre-wire, but this is
fairly uncommon.
Q. Will my yard be dug up for installation?
A. Most yards will not be dug up during installation. In the rare case that Cox
detects an unserviceable
cable drop to a home, we would need to replace that cable using conduit, so we
would never have
to dig again. Your installer will be able to let you know when he visits your
home. As always, we take
extreme measures to minimize the impact to your property.
Q. Is there a fee to switch to Cox Long Distance?
A. No. There is no charge to switch over to Cox Long Distance. There are several
Cox Long Distance
Plans to choose from that are likely to fit your family’s needs and budget.
Q. What’s the difference between intrastate and interstate calls?
A. Intrastate refers to calls that originate and terminate within the same
state. Interstate calls
originate in one state and terminate in another. For example, a call from
Fredericksburg to Richmond is
considered intrastate, while a call from Fredericksburg to Los Angeles is interstate.
Cox is licensed to provide
both intrastate and interstate services to our customers. We also provide
international service.
Q. Please explain some of the FCC charges on my bill.
A. The Universal Fund Fee was created by the FCC to help provide affordable
telecommunications
and advanced services such as Internet access for low-income families, remote
areas, and eligible
organizations. All long distance carriers pay into this fund. The Carrier Line
Fee helps recover
a portion of fees paid to local telephone companies for access.
Q. Can I have all of my Cox services billed together?
A. Yes. For customers who qualify, Cox provides a flexible billing option so
customers can decide
what services they wish to have billed together, and which services they wish to
have on separate
statements. For example, a customer who has video, telephone and Internet
services through Cox can
get all three on one convenient monthly bill. Ask one of our Customer Care
Representatives if you
qualify for these billing options.
