Q: Is
my bill increasing?
A: No
price increase is associated with new upstream speeds.
Q: Do
I have to do anything to get the faster speeds?
A: Not at
all. Cox is proactively updating its speeds to ensure you
are getting the best value for your service. Your modem
will be reset briefly (about 5 minutes) between 12am and 6am
on the morning of Tuesday, July 15th. Following
this period, you can simply log onto the Internet and start
taking advantage of the faster speeds.
Q: Do
I need new equipment to take advantage of the faster speeds?
A:
Chances are you don’t. As long as your modem is listed on
Cox’s approved modem list
(found on support.cox.com), you
can take advantage of the fastest speeds offered by Cox.
Q:
What should I do if my modem is not on the supported modem
list?
A: To
fully enjoy the speed increase, we recommend purchasing a
new modem. As technology changes, so does the equipment
needed to deliver the new services. If you’d prefer to
continue using your existing modem, you will more than
likely experience an increase in speed, but not to the
fullest extent possible.
Q: Why
aren’t you increasing speeds for Economy and Value
customers?
A:
Both our Economy
and Value packages provide customers with a terrific value
for the money. These packages are designed for the casual
e-mail user and Web surfer who doesn’t need a great deal of
speed. If you’re interested in getting even more out of
your Internet experience, we encourage you to try our
Preferred tier – by far, our most popular package.
Q. Is
Cox increasing speeds just because the competition is?
A.
Speeds are determined based on a variety of factors
including competition. However, these speed increases have
been in the works for quite some time and Cox has a long
history of offering customers faster speeds. In fact, this
is the fifth year in a row we’ve enhanced speeds for Cox
High Speed Internet customers.
Q:
Would I benefit from upgrading to a higher level of service?
A: The
vast majority of our customers choose our Preferred and
Premier Internet packages. Both come with the free
PowerBoost feature, which gives you an added burst of speed
for downloads (and soon for uploads) when there’s extra
space available on the network. Also, both offer some of
the fastest speeds in the market. Our Preferred service is
ideal for surfing the Web and downloading photos and music.
The Premier service is the best choice for power gamers,
telecommuters and families with home networks connecting
several computers.
Q. I
used a speed test server and the results showed that I am
getting slower speeds than expected.
A: Cox
does not recommend using third-party speed test servers.
The test servers do not accurately “test” the speed that Cox
is delivering on its network. Instead, these servers
provide results that show how long it takes you to
download/upload data across many elements of the connection,
including the Cox network, the Internet at large, the
network the speed test server is connected to and your home
network. It is not an accurate representation of the actual
speeds that Cox provides over our network to our customers
because:
-
The
test servers are located outside of Cox’s network. Once
data leaves Cox’s network it can be slowed down by a
number of factors that are out of our control.
-
There
are a number of variables on your personal computer that
can slow down your speeds (such as viruses and spyware)
that the speed test servers cannot diagnose or take into
consideration. So, while Cox is delivering the speeds
expected, a virus or spyware program on your computer
may be slowing down your connection.
-
The
hardware in your home (your modem or router) may be
slowing your download speeds. Cox recommends 100 Base T
Ethernet port plus a Cox-approved modem for maximum
speed.
If you feel like you are not experiencing the full speed
potential, we recommend visiting our support site for a list
of ways to troubleshoot your connection. These might
include:
Checking
your hardware to see if it is current (refer customer to

modems)
